Scholarship Caponigro Public Relations Inc. is a Michigan-based, strategic public relations firm that specializes in obtaining positive media results; working with companies in times of crises; helping to position corporations, brand products and services in a competitive marketplace; and, providing smart communications counsel for organizations experiencing change. The firm’s expertise includes: strategic public relations counsel, media relations, crisis management, public affairs, community relations, diversity counsel, spokesperson training, executive coaching, marketing communications, and research and analysis. Jeffrey R. Caponigro, 1979 CMU graduate, established Caponigro Public Relations Inc. in 1995, after serving as President and CEO at another Detroit-area public relations firm. He has built Caponigro Public Relations into one of the most respected public relations firms in the United States and he is recognized as one of the nation’s top public relations professionals and crisis-management experts. Mr. Jeffrey R. Caponigro Caponigro is the author of one of the most popular business books on the subject of crisis management, Founder & CEO called The Crisis Counselor. In 2001, he was the only one from the Midwest inducted into the Public Relations Society of America’s College of Fellows, recognizing lifetime achievement of the country’s top public relations professionals. While attending Central Michigan University, he was a reporter and columnist for three Michigan newspapers. He received Central Michigan University’s first-ever Young Alumni Award in 1991 in honor of his achievements in business, and he was one of only 100 CMU graduates to receive a Centennial Award in honor of the University’s 100- year anniversary. Caponigro Public Relations Inc. Scholarship The purpose of the Caponigro Public Relations Inc. Endowed Scholarship is: • To promote excellence in Journalism or Integrative Public Relations, • To provide an educational experience to a CMU student with financial need who wishes to pursue a career in public relations. Selection Criteria Scholarship candidates must be a senior in high school with a cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher, and must demonstrate financial need as determined by CMU’s Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid. To apply, candidates must submit all of the following to the Scholarship Selection Committee by May 1, 2006: • This completed scholarship application typed or printed, • A cover letter expressing the desire to earn the scholarship, • At least one letter of recommendation from a journalism teacher, or a teacher in media studies, or an employer working in the media, • An essay (no more than two pages) on the topic: “Why I am interested in becoming a journalist or public relations professional”, • A sample of work. This could include a clipping from a student newspaper or other publication, or a tape of radio or television work. • A completed application for admission to CMU (, • An official copy of high school transcripts. To maintain this renewable, four year scholarship, the recipient must: • Maintain a cumulative 3.0 or higher GPA, • Should have a signed major in and maintain a degree track in Journalism or Integrative Public Relations. The scholarship recipient will be eligible to apply for a paid internship at Caponigro Public Relations Inc.

The College of Communication & Fine Arts consists of the Departments of Journalism, Broadcast and Cinematic Arts, Speech Communication and Dramatic Arts, Art, the School of Music and interdisciplinary majors in Integrative Public Relations and Music Theatre. There are 2100 students with majors in these divisions and 150 faculty in the College. We paint, conduct, act, direct, interpret, sculpt, choreograph, draw, weave, cast and broadcast. All of this work is tightly woven into a learning tapestry by the threads of instruction, mentorship, work and play. The College of Communication & Fine Arts places primary emphasis on the exellence of its faculty, staff and students. Students can achieve excellence through one-on-one interaction with dedicated and caring faculty recognied with national, state and university awards. Students and faculty work together in artistic and scholarly activities to enhance both teaching and learning. The Department of Journalism is accredited by the Council for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications, a distinction held by only one other Michigan university. The Journalism program balances classroom theory with service learning and other structured hands-on experiences that help students develop the skills required for entry-level positions in the media. Students take a common core of courses and elect one of four concentrations: news editorial, photojournalism, public relations or advertising. Students enhance their classoom learning with practical experiences that most interest them. The department’s close association with CM Life, CMU’s campus newspaper and recipient of numerous awards from the Associated Collegiate Press, is expecially noteworthy. Students who work as CM Life staff are exposed to the intense daily experiences that comprise professional life in these disciplines and can begin involvement in these activities immediately upon their arrival on campus. Placement rates upon graduation for these students are excellent. Through CMU’s Integrative Public Relations program, students will gain the skills necessary to strategically develop and communicate an organization’s messages, services or events to a specific audience. The skills and talents of the public relations professional are becoming more and more important to the success of organizations of all kinds which can only exist and thrive with public understanding and approval. Earning and maintaining public confidence is the key role of the public relations practitioner. An important feature of the Integrative Public Relations curriculum is its interdisciplinary approach by combining the strengths of its journalism, broadcast and cinematic arts and interpersonal and public communication programs to provide students with a comprehensive education. Courses will help students develop skills in the areas of public relations writing, broadcast and cable promotion and graphics and visual communication. Students will also study in a variety of elective courses including communication, broadcasting, marketing, journalism, computer science and entrepreneurial studies.
