ICT in Career Guidance at Fjarnám
• The goal is to provide Lifelong Guidance – as
described by ELGPN:
“The European Lifelong Guidance Policy
Network, ELGPN was established in 2007, with
the aim of assisting its member-countries and
the European Commission in developing
European co-operation on lifelong guidance in
both the education and the employment
sectors”
• These guidelines have been translated,
adapted to Faroese circumstances and handed
to Faroese authorities in May, 2017.
Career Guidance - a New Area in the Faroe
Islands
1.The MA education in CGC at the Faroese

2. NVL groups (Nordic Network for Adult
Learning)
- have promoted the importance and need
for using
ICT in Career Guidance and Counselling
in Nordic remote regions – Åland, Greenland
and the Faroe Islands

information and medium for one-
to-one communication, an
interactive working space, and
impetus for paradigm change and
reform.”

• “Success in developing competency for social media in
career services is a dynamic combination of cognitive,
social, emotional and ethical factors that are interwoven
• Competency for existing and emerging technologies in
career services is not only about a set of new skills.
• The challenge to guidance practitioners as a profession
is to decide how to fully, and best use existing and
emerging technologies
• We can create new practices and paradigms to better
reach individuals who need assistance with career
exploration and decision making.”
Challenges:
• Emerging technology provides new oportunities to serve
individuals
• Key challenge to ensure ICT qualification for CGCs
• Increasing importance to be able to work in this new
mode of using ICT

Julianna Deirdre Hansen Career Guidance Counsellor - at distant learning centre Fjarnám in Klaksvík - at University of Faroe Islands 2017 MA in Career Guidance and Counseling, University of Faroe Islands 2013 BSc Social Science and Community Planning, University of Faroe Islands 2000 Educated ICT School Counselor - worked with integrating ICT into education and teaching, 1993- 2007, MMR 1985 Teacher Training College, FL, - Teacher in primary and secondary schools for 22 years 2000-03 Advisor in teaching English and ICT, LMS/NÁM 2015-18 Member of ”ICT and Guidance” and ”Distans” in NVL, Nordic Network for Adult Learning

ICT in Career Guidance at Fjarnám • The goal is to provide Lifelong Guidance – as described by ELGPN: “The European Lifelong Guidance Policy Network, ELGPN was established in 2007, with the aim of assisting its member-countries and the European Commission in developing European co-operation on lifelong guidance in both the education and the employment sectors” • These guidelines have been translated, adapted to Faroese circumstances and handed to Faroese authorities in May, 2017.
  • 4. Career Guidance - a New Area in the Faroe Islands 1.The MA education in CGC at the Faroese University (2013-2017) and 2. NVL groups (Nordic Network for Adult Learning) - have promoted the importance and need for using ICT in Career Guidance and Counselling in Nordic remote regions – Åland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands
  • 5. Role of ICT according to research: “Social media in career services was experienced as means for delivering information and medium for one- to-one communication, an interactive working space, and impetus for paradigm change and reform.” Source: Kettunen, Vuorinen, Sampson (2013)

Research done by Jaana Kettunen et al. • “Success in developing competency for social media in career services is a dynamic combination of cognitive, social, emotional and ethical factors that are interwoven • Competency for existing and emerging technologies in career services is not only about a set of new skills. • The challenge to guidance practitioners as a profession is to decide how to fully, and best use existing and emerging technologies • We can create new practices and paradigms to better reach individuals who need assistance with career exploration and decision making.” Challenges: • Emerging technology provides new oportunities to serve individuals • Key challenge to ensure ICT qualification for CGCs • Increasing importance to be able to work in this new mode of using ICT

CGC experience of using ICT at Fjarnám Excellent tools for: 1.Establishing and providing contacts 2.Promoting and sending information 3.Motivating and assisting clients in processing data 4.Increasing access to guidance 5.Conveniant 6.Anonimous 7.Cost-effective But F2F guidance is still very important and necessary as CGC is new to native adults in the Faroe Islands
