University of Bologna <br />Origins:<br />-Although disputed, 1088 is commonly accepted as the beginning of the University <br />-Received a charter from King Frederick in 1158<br />-Oldest university in the western world<br />Faculty/Student Relationship: - Faculty were paid by their students to give lectures <br /> Curriculum:<br />-Law was prominent initially; Liberal Arts took on a secondary role <br />-Much of it influenced by Aristotle<br />-12th century: Mathematics, Physics, Astrology, Medicine are introduced<br />-13th century: Theology officially offered within university <br />-14th century: Renaissance movement promoted classical studies <br />-15th century: Greek and Hebrew studies added<br />Governance:<br />-1158: Research allowed to develop independently from any other power<br />-Considered a “student-run” university for much of early existence <br />-Catholic church, Pope were influential in curriculum development; eventually took control in 1600’s <br />Tradition(s): <br />-International Relations (students/faculty exchanges) <br />References<br /><ul><li>Our History.
