Dear Ms. Vaughn:
I am very happy to write this letter in support of Nick Johnson’s application to your MBA program with
an emphasis on journalism and mass communication.
I have known Nick for more than year and taught him in two classes, History of Journalism and Visual
Communication. He earned an A in both courses, and his performance on papers and exams demonstrated
his strong command of the material and his perceptive and sophisticated thinking. In class, he offered
insightful comments and clearly was engaged. Indeed, he had perfect attendance both semesters (with 28
class meetings each semester). That unusual achievement speaks to his commitment and reliability as well
as his level of respect for education. I never had any doubt that Nick would fully execute his assignments
and would come to class prepared. He also seemed genuinely interested in understanding people and
events beyond the scope of his own experience (even historical figures!).
Nick’s work ethic and intellectual strength make him an excellent candidate for graduate study. His work
as a marketing intern with a company helping local businesses and as a mentor in the Pennsylvania
School for Global Entrepreneurship are further evidence of his interest in new ways of thinking about
business. These experiences have given him a foundation in management skills that your program will
strengthen. The fact that he has gained those experiences while maintaining a high academic GPA is
proof of his discipline and drive.
Nick is a strong communicator. His writing is clean and thorough, and he thinks before he speaks. He
strikes me as very mature and poised even in this early stage of his career. I have no doubt that he will
thrive in your program and will make the most of every opportunity.
I recommend Nick Johnson to you with no reservations, and I would be glad to answer any questions you
might have about him. Thank you for your attention to this letter and to his application.
Sincerely,
Carolyn Kitch, Ph.D.
