2. 2. Slavery

Although slavery had been around for centuries it unfortunately became a very common theme in the 15th-18th centuries.

This was due to the Transatlantic Slave Trade or “Triangular Trade.”

This involved three areas, the Old World, Africa and the New World.

As the native populations were of the new world severely downsized due to slavery the countries of Western Europe began looking elsewhere for slaves.

Africa became the place in which the Old World countries would get all of these new slaves.

The picture on the bottom right shows exactly what was traded during the era of the Triangular Trade.

 3. 3.

This map shows what part of Africa the slaves were taken from and where they were sent.

 4. 4. Effects of Slavery

The Transatlantic Slave Trade was devastating to the African people.

Entire tribes were wiped out in some cases, in others families were separated.

Many died in route to their new destination because travel conditions were awful.

Hundreds of Africans were packed in boats shoulder to shoulder, therefore disease spread quickly. (top right)

The Transatlantic slave trade would have lasting effects that can still be felt in some areas of Africa today.
