Two Turntables and a Microphone: Scarce Resources and the Emergence of Hip Hop

Download to read offline

In the early days, hip-hop musicians had to be resourceful in order to extend songs (and the party). By today’s standards the tools they used to make ‘extended plays’ were very basic. We will discuss how innovation in DJ culture and hip hop came not because of plentiful resources, but precisely because of
limitations. This can be a model for us to innovate today, and make a lot out of little. Presented at Moorpark College's Multicultural Day April 11, 2017 by Nathan Bowen, with turntable demonstration by Franklin Munoz.
