VR-01 Vrittha Rathnakaram and Narayaneeyam

Powerpoint of Day 1 Speaker : Nanda Mohan Shenoy( Contact Samskritham21@gmail.com) छन्दस् known as meter plays a very important role both in the Vedic language as well as Sanskrit Literature or Kavyas.
The छन्दस् used in Sanskrit Literature is quite different from that of the Vedias. The छन्दस् has been further sub classified as Matra Chandas and Varna Chandas. There are around 175-200 different combinations of both the classifications put together . These combinations are the reason behind enhancing the beauty of the music be it in terms of Raaga or Taala.
Narayaneeyam is a Bhakti Kavya having 100 Dashakas and 1034 Slokas written in mid-1580 AD has used 25 of the said metres and is an excellent work to understand the various types of popular Vritthas. In this 85 Dashakas use only one type Vrittham (23 Vrittham across 85 Dashakas)and the balance 15 dashakas have multiple vrittham within the same Dashaka. This becomes a complex task for the music fraternity as the number of syllables keep changing . A brief overview of the online sessions are as below :
