  2. 2. A state-of-the-art specialist paediatric academic and tertiary referral hospital providing child-centred best quality medical services to children of Southern Africa, irrespective of their social and economic status. Vision
  3. 3. Support Government support directed through the active involvement of the National Department of Health (NDoH) and Gauteng Department of Health and Social Development (GDHSD). The NDoH ensures policy alignment to Modernisation of Tertiary Services. The GDHSD guides strategic fit to provincial health delivery plans and operations to be pitched at the right level.

NMCF’s Role • Champion the creation of a child-centred health facility to impact upon those who are treated and work in it. • Smooth the progress for the establishment of a teaching hospital driven by research at the cutting edge. • Build a hospital that marks the turning point on how Africa views its children by providing state- of-the-art specialist health care to all children. • Delegate Wits University to offer academic leadership, coupled with the responsibility to guarantee the involvement and participation of all medical faculties to attain a full spectrum of services to be offered as per complete set of its centres of excellence.

Location After scrutiny and due process the site location, the Wits Education Campus ― in Parktown, adjacent to the Wits Medical School and Charlotte Maxeke Hospital ― was ruled the most viable for the Hospital. Agreement with Wits regarding the land was entered into in July 2009. Size 200-bed, 8-theatre hospital with state-of-the-art diagnostic capabilities with expansion to 300 beds.
  6. 6. Staff Will employ approximately 655 staff, including specialist doctors and nurses, and will contribute to the training of paediatric professionals. An agreement has been reached with GDHSD to train medical professionals. Staffing Strategy To use a majority of South African professionals and attract back South African medical professionals currently working overseas. Specialised nurse training will be in partnership with Wits prior to the opening of NMCH. The nursing strategy places nurses at the core of holistic paediatric care.
  7. 7. Hospital Design Child and environmentally-friendly design and service considerations to ensure a holistic healing experience. Architecture by Sheppard Robson International, in conjunction with South African Architects GAPP and Ruben Reddy. Governance Operating (Section 21 company) and Asset company reporting to the Nelson Mandela Hospital Trust.

Academic Arrangement In partnership with Wits Medical School as a primary base, but with engagement of all medical training facilities in the region in line with the Hospital Centres of Excellence.
