  8. 8. 1312 Information Unlocking thevalue ofdata While ANSPs have always collected data in order to provide the right navigation information to airlines and pilots, that information has only been used in isolation. We are working with a number of partners to increase the value of data by bringing it together from disparate sources. This allows us to generate information that will give you a powerful commercial edge. One of the ways we can do this is by combining weather, aircraft positioning and delay data, enabling airlines to offer customers valuable real-time information about arrival and departure schedules, and to make air travel more predictable. The same information can also be used to anticipate problems and re-route aircraft at an early stage in their journey to ensure delays are kept to a minimum. Taking data further As data management is a complex and still evolving area, many airports and ATC providers are unlikely to have the in-house resource available to deliver this function. And the investment to develop this capacity may well be prohibitive. We were one of the first ANSPs to manage and track data, anticipating that it will be a driving force behind future ATC operations. The combination of our industry expertise, the raw A vast range of data is collected within the aviation industry, from weather updates to aircraft positioning. We can combine this data in new ways so it becomes a uniquely valuable resource – for you and your customers. data we generate in-house and the knowledge gained during our own data management system development makes our Information service unique. We can now make our expertise available to you through a wide range of innovative services, designed to help you with challenges such as pre-flight information and airport planning. New solutions for new legislation Our Information service can also provide the cutting-edge solutions you need to keep pace with changing technology and legislation. The introduction of SES in Europe and NextGen in the US are driving these changes, calling for all participating regions to source navigational data from a single, agreed, point of truth. With that in mind, many airlines, airports and ATC providers will be affected by upcoming legislation that demands even greater accuracy and consistency. 2012NATS UK eAIP launched. Providing a fully data-driven product enabling enhanced efficiencies and accuracy Increasingly our customers are looking to information as the key enabler for future efficiency, improved passenger experience and flight optimisation. “ ”Andy Sage Head of NATS Information A closer look at our Information service Our Information service offers valuable knowledge based on our own management and use of aviation data. This strategy must, of course, make sure that security and safety are never compromised. With airspace around the world becoming increasingly congested, this is a tough challenge. Our Defence service has the expertise to work with you and bring all these aspects together, finding newer and smarter ways to improve operational performance as well as cost-efficiency. We have many years’ experience in civil/military harmonisation, finding solutions that deliver airspace benefits for both these stakeholders. Understanding your unique challenges We have proven expertise in this area, gained through decades working with the Ministry of Defence integrating civil and military airspace in the UK. In 2011, NATS and the MoD were awarded an Air Officer Commanding’s Commendation for their outstanding achievements delivering complex projects through unique innovations and a collaborative approach. Through our close working relationship with the UK MoD, we have developed an innate knowledge of what needs to be achieved in terms of ATM and airspace requirements, allowing us to deliver the right results at minimal cost. The military across the world are under pressure to share airspace with civil aviation for commercial, political and environmental reasons. As we have proven in the UK, this needn’t be a compromise – it can offer advantages for all concerned. Our dedicated teams with civil/military experience can share your issues and challenges to streamline harmonisation. They are experienced in integrating systems for either joint or flexible use by civil/military aircraft and can help you restructure your airspace to make it work seamlessly. You can also benefit from innovative ATC services, developed in the commercial environment, which we have tailored for civil/military use. A range of services to prepare you for the future The challenge of shared airspace is, of course, complex. National security, passenger safety and commercial performance all provide a potent mix that has to be dealt with sensitively, and needs a partner with experience in all these areas. The challenge is not to find a satisfactory compromise, but to develop a solution with benefits all round. You may well be looking at combined ATC, airfield management or even outsourcing to help you meet it. Whichever direction you take, our Defence service has the innovative solutions you need in areas such as aeronautical data, consulting and surveillance that will meet everyone’s needs. With our help you can create a more flexible future of constrained costs, exceptional safety and heightened efficiency. “The close collaboration between NATS and the MoD enables us to share both the airspace and infrastructure capability to manage that airspace. 10. 10. 1716 Visit our website: nats.co.uk/environment Environment Reducing aviation’s environmental impact The environment remains a top priority both for us and for our customers. As part of our environmental strategy we are implementing smarter and more responsive ways to reduce aviation’s impact through all of our service lines. This allows us to provide both capacity and sustainability at the same time. Howwe’remakingadifference Looking to the future We are looking to the future in a wide range of ways, such as extensive training for our controllers and working with airlines and airports to identify best practice, which we are putting into use in airspace design and daily ATC operations. This means that whichever service you need, from Airspace to Information, you’ll benefit from reduced environmental impact and, as a consequence, reduced energy costs and fuel burn. Reducing CO2 emissions The key issue facing NATS and the aviation industry is the need to reduce global greenhouse gas through fuel burn, with the cost of fuel providing a financial motivation. With this in mind, we consider the environmental impact of how we control aircraft every day. This includes improving the efficiency of our airspace and route network as well as investing in new technology. Tracking our progress Having developed techniques to measure our environmental performance daily, monthly and annually, we can now track progress towards our CO2 targets in detail. Our Operational Centres and Airport Units have Environment Action Plans and annual environmental targets to improve fuel and emissions savings. Our strategic target is now supported by our 3Di metric, an incentivised flight efficiency measurement for our en-route services – a world first. Putting our plans into action We are concentrating on seven key areas to ensure our commitment to the environment produces substantial results. These are: Airspace Reducing CO2 emissions through airspace and procedure changes. In-flight Increasing in-flight efficiencies. For instance, through focused and data- led plans for airspace improvements that reduce fuel burn and emissions. Technology Using innovative tools and precision navigation techniques to allow aircraft to fly closer to their optimum route, profile and speed. People and operations Minimising our own environmental footprint in areas such as energy, water, waste management and recycling. Innovative noise management Working with airports, airlines and communities to explore optional procedures to limit noise disturbance to people living under flight paths. Innovation We have introduced ground-breaking ways to reduce emissions and save fuel, such as a flight profile monitoring tool and 3Di environmental metric. Partnerships We talk to airline and airport customers, as well as industry partners such as Sustainable Aviation and ICAO, to find better environmental solutions. 29% Reduction in overall energy consumption since 2006. £72m Annual saving to airline customers in reduced fuel burn 1 Innovation Ground-breaking ways to reduce emissions and save fuel. 2 Partnerships Collaborating to find better environmental solutions. 3 Trials We have headed up an industry consortium to take environmentally- friendly flying to a new level. 4 Airspace Reducing CO2 emissions through airspace and procedure changes. 5 In-flight Focused plans for airspace improvements that reduce fuel burn and emissions. 6 People Minimising our environmental footprint in the way we operate our business. 7 3Di World’s first incentivised flight efficiency measurement. “Our ongoing Acting Responsibly programme will help the sustainable growth of the aviation industry.
