Global Security & Brand Protection assisted Specialized IP Units with Peru’s
Attorney General’s Office & National Police in a search warrant in Lima, Peru
of a suspect manufacturer and distributor of personal flotation devices
bearing counterfeit UL Listing marks. 100 finished and 100 unfinished life
jackets with counterfeit UL Listing marks were located and seized during the
operation. Children’s life jackets were also found to be manufactured and sold
by the suspect company

7. UL12402
In efforts to comply with the U.S.-Canada Regulatory Council (RCC) that was
created on 4 February 2011, the United States Coast Guard, Transport
Canada, industry and other stakeholders decided to develop harmonized
standards for flotation devices that would move towards the elimination of
regulatory restrictions.
UL currently has the capabilities to test and certify applicable products to
UL12402-5, Personal Flotation Devices – Part 5: Buoyancy Aids (Level 50) –
Safety Requirements.
As additional parts of UL12402 and UL15027 (Immersion Suits) are
published, UL will be ready to offer testing and certifications for new and
existing products once agreed upon by USCG and TC.

UL staff are prepared to assist the Life Jacket Association with the transition
to the new marking and labeling requirements currently published in UL1123
and being adopted into UL1180.
Once UL1123 and UL1180 have both been published, our staff will be
contacting each of our impacted customers to develop an implementation
plan based on the future effective date developed.

In addition to flotation devices, UL is also an accredited certification body and
test house for numerous other personal protective equipment which can be
certified to a wide range of standards such NFPA, ASSE, ASTM, ISEA, EN
and ISO.
