Editor's Notes

  • WELCOME TO NEBRASKA!!!! WE ARE DELIGHTED TO HOST THE 2011 NASBA WESTERN REGIONAL AT THIS TIME, I WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE OUR BOARD MEMBERS AND STAFF (NEXT)
  • READ NAME AND CITY UNFORTUNATELY FOR ALL, MY NAME IS NOT WARREN BUFFET. I AM DOUG SKILES IF ANYONE IS LOOKING FOR THINGS TO DO, DAY TRIPS, ETC, PLEASE ASK US!! WE WANT YOU TO ENJOY YOUR STAY, AND UNDERSTAND WHY WE LOVE THIS STATE
  • I AM FROM MCCOOK, IN SW NE, A LITTLE TOWN OF 8K HALF WAY BETWEEN OMAHA AND DENVER. SO SMALL, IT DIDN ’T EVEN MAKE THE MAP. BUT IT IS NOT SLEEPY! HOME OF GOVERNOR BROOKS, GOVERNOR MORRISON, CHILDHOOD HOME OF GOVERNOR HEINAMEN, GOVERNOR AND US SENATOR BEN NELSON, AND US SENATOR GEORGE NORRIS, DESIGNER OF THE ONE OF A KIND UNICAMERAL SYSTEM, AND CO-AUTHOR OF THE RURAL ELECTRIFICATION ACT, TURNING THE LIGHTS ON IN RURAL AMERICA, WITH THE TENNESEE VALLEY AUTHORITY AND HYDRO ELECTRIC POWER NEBRASKA IS AN INDIAN TERM MEANING “FLATWATER” AND YOU ARE LITERALLY ONLY A FEW MINUTES WALK FROM THE TRAIL THAT LOUIS AND CLARK TOOK UP THE MISSOURI RIVER NEBRASKA IS 77358 SQ MI, 1.8 million people, half of which live in omaha and lincoln(NEXT)
  • AND HAS HISTORIC AND SCENIC HIGHWAY 2 WHICH STRETCHES OVER 530 MILES FROM CORNER TO CORNER, TRAVERSING ALONG BEAUTIFUL RIVER VALLEYS AND CUTTING THROUGH THE SAND HILLS
  • NOW IF YOU DROVE IN FROM THE WEST, IT PROBABLY LOOKED SOMETHING LIKE THIS, AND YOU THOUGHT TO YOURSELF, NEBRASKA IS REALLY FLAT. WELL YOU PROBABLY CAME DOWN INTERSTATE 80, AND YES IT IS FLAT. BUT THERE IS A GOOD REASON FOR THAT. IT IS A NATURAL HIGHWAY.
  • IF YOU STOPPED AT THE GREAT RIVER ROAD ARCHWAY NEAR KEARNEY NEBRASKA YOU WOULD HAVE LEARNED THAT I 80 IS PART OF THE FIRST TRANSCONTINENTAL INTERESTATE. IT RUNS PARALLEL THE LINCOLN HIGHWAY, WHICH WAS THE FIRST TRANSCONTINENTAL HIGHWAY BUILT IN THE UNITED STATES IT PARALLELED THE FIRST RAILROAD TO CROSS FROM COAST TO COAST, NOW KNOWN AS THE UNION PACIFIC
  • THE PONY EXPRESS HAD ROUTES ALONG THIS SAME ROUTE
  • THE PONY EXPRESS ONLY OPERATED A COUPLE OF YEARS, MADE OBSOLETE BY THE RAILROAD
  • THE RAILROAD WAS BUILT JUST A COUPLE MILES FROM FORT KEARNY WHICH BECAME A STOPPING POINT FOR MANY PIONEERS TRAVELING WEST. THE OREGON TRAIL, CALIFORNIA TRAIL, MORMAN TRAIL AND THE GOLD RUSH TRAIL
  • THE PIONEERS IN KEARNEY AREA ALSO WITHNISSED A MAGICAL SITE. THIS IS A NATURAL STOPPING POINT FOR THE ANNUAL MIGRATION OF MILLIONS OF WHOOPING CRANES, EAGLES, DUCKS, GEESE. IN FEBRUARY AND MARCH, THE BIRDS ARE SO PLENTIFUL, PEOPLE TRAVEL FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD TO WITNESS CLOUDS CHANGING FROM GRAY TO WHITE AS THE BIRDS CIRCLE TO LAND
  • FOLLOWING THE INTERESTATE WEST OF KEARNEY IS NORTH PLATTE, HOME OF BUFFALO BILL CODY
  • SO NATURALLY, WE LIKE OUR RODEOS IN THE WEST
  • BUT NORTH PLATTE IS ALSO KNOWN FOR ITS RAILROAD HERITAGE
  • NORTH PLATTE IS HOME TO ONE OF THE BUSIEST TRACKS IN THE WORLD. AT THE GOLDEN SPIKE MUSEUM AND OBSERVATION DECK AT UNION PACIFIC ’S BAILEY YARD
  • BAILEY YARD IN NORTH PLATTE– THE LARGEST CLASSIFICATION OR “HUMP YARD” IN THE WORLD COVERS 2800 ACRES AND EMPLOYS ALMOST ONE PERSON PER ACRE 16 RECEIVING AND 17 DEPARTURE TRACKS HANDLE 14000 RAIL CARS EVERY 24 HRS. ON-SITE CAR REPAIR REPLACES 10,000 PAIRS OF WHEELS ANNUALLY
  • THE RAILROAD NOT ONLY CONNECTED THE EAST TO THE WEST, BUT IT STIMULATED NEW MARKETS. CATTLE DRIVES THAT BEGAN IN TEXAS NOW ENDED ON OGALLALA NEBRASKA, A TRUE COWBOY TOWN. AND WHERE THERE WERE COWBOYS, THERE WERE GUN FIGHTS. FOR A PERIOD OF SEVERAL YEARS, THE LITTLE CATTLE TOWN OF OGALLALA, POPULATION LESS THAN 200, AVERAGED 5 OR MORE DEATHS PER YEAR BY GUN SHOT. MANY A COWBOY ENDED HIS TRAIL RIDE HERE ON BOOT HILL IN OGALLALA
  • WEST OF OGALLALA, THE PIONEERS HEADED NORTHWEST TOWARDS CHIMNEY ROCK, IN THE PANHANDLE NEAR SCOTTS BLUFF
