  1. 1. Standardized EVM charts using wInsight Briefing Wizard Presented to Project Management Challenge 2012 February 22 – 23, 2012 Robert M. Hesenperger, MBA, PMP Jeffrey T. Kottmyer, MBA, PMP Earned Value Lead Program Support and Business Systems Specialist Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Project SGT Headquarters Staff Hesenperger/Kottmyer: 2012 PM Challenge 1
  2. 2. Topics• Issue, Standardizing Data presentation locally and at NASA Headquarters• Resulting Briefing• Using Deltek wInsight Modules Hesenperger/Kottmyer: 2012 PM Challenge 2
  3. 3. Issue, Standardizing Data presentation locally and at NASA Headquarters• Issue: Earned Value Management (EVM) Project data is presented in many forms at Goddard and NASA Headquarters – This leads to an uncertain understanding of the project’s earned value management data. – Earth Sciences, Code 420, at Goddard wanted to use the same earned value data for the project and for the program executive• Solution: – Include slides that defined the terms and acronyms used – Coordinate the data and presentations between the Project Manager and the Program Executive Hesenperger/Kottmyer: 2012 PM Challenge 3
  4. 4. Issue, Standardizing Data presentation locally and at NASA Headquarters• Issue: Manual production of charts consumes a significant amount of time• Solution: Automate the process of producing chart by using Deltek wInsight Desktop and Deltek wInsight Professional – Deltek MPM Connect extracts data from Deltek Micro-Frame Project Manager (MPM) via an XML file that imports in to Deltek wInsight Professional – wInsight defines charts and graphs and filters – Briefing Wizard uses wInsight charts and graphs and filters to automatically produce PowerPoint slides in a few seconds Hesenperger/Kottmyer: 2012 PM Challenge 4

Terminology• PMB = Performance Measurement Baseline• MR = Management Reserve• Budget Base = PMB + MR• Plan = PV or BCWP• Performance = EV or BCWP• Actuals = AC or ACWP• Stoplight Index Colors: Red < .90, Yellow - >+.90 and <.95, Green >=.95 and <1.1, and Blue >=1.1. White indicated no data.• Change Arrows: more than 10% negative change is a down arrow; negative 10% to positive 10% change is a horizontal arrow; and more that 10% positive change is an up arrow.• CPI = Cost Performance Index = BCWP/ACWP• SPI = Schedule Performance Index = BCWP/BCWS• Element is another word for WBS. 0000000 indicates the entire GPM Project.• Cum Element Performance – This chart shows the Estimate to Complete for the next 6 months along with the historic values for plan, performance, and actuals.
