  3. 3. What Features ShouldI Put on my Cards? Ask these questions to help you determine the right options for your plastic card printing project: – How will these cards be used? – Do I need to store data on the card? – Do I need to verify who that card holder is? – How frequently will the card-holder use the card? – What will the card-holder use the card for? – What information needs to be on the card? 4. 4. Available Options for Plastic Cards  There are many options that meet your needs, or the needs of the card- holder. – Mag stripes – Encoding – Variable Imaging – Signature panel – Scratch-off My1Stop.com © 2012 www.my1stop.com | 1.800.691.7867 | support@my1stop.com
  5. 5. Mag Stripes Printing a magnetic or mag stripe on a plastic card enables the card to store data by modifying the magnetism of the magnetic material on the stripe. The data on a mag stripe is read by swiping it through a reading head or reader. Magstripes come in two varieties: low-coercivity and high-coercivity. – Low-coercivity magstripes require a lower amount of magnetic energy to record, so the magstripe writers are much less expensive. – High-coercivity magstripes are harder to erase because the card writers apply more information using a more powerful magnetic field. A mag card reader (what you see in the stores, on gas pumps, etc.) can read either type of magnetic stripe. 6. 6. Plastic Card Encoding The mag stripe must be encoded with data that you provide. Encoding is done by a machine called a mag stripe writer. The writer encodes data by modifying the magnetism of tiny iron- based magnetic particles on the mag stripe. The mag stripe writer can encode information about your organization and/or about the card holder. Encoding is done on either a low-coercivity or a high-coercivity writer. My1Stop.com © 2012 www.my1stop.com | 1.800.691.7867 | support@my1stop.com
  7. 7. Encoding Options As previously mentioned, low-coercivity writers are relatively inexpensive because they use minimal magnetic energy. – Hotel key cards and retail gift cards are examples that use low-coercivity mag stripes. High-coercivity writers are the more expensive writer option. They use more magnetic energy to encode the card, making the cards more secure and capable of holding more data, including encryption. – Credit cards are an example that uses high-coercivity mag stripes. 8. 8. Variable Imaging Variable Imaging refers to the printing barcodes, images, numbers or names that are different on each plastic cards. Not only do you need a static design for the card, but you must also consider features, like where you will be adding numbers or data points (e.g. photo ID, card-holder name, etc.) My1Stop.com © 2012 www.my1stop.com | 1.800.691.7867 | support@my1stop.com
  9. 9. Signature Panel The signature panel provides added customization and security to plastic cards. Signature panels are not only used for security purposes, they are common on membership, loyalty, and discount cards as well as ID badges. When you choose the signature panel feature from My1Stop.com, we provide a matte writable laminate covering one side of the card – not just a signature panel in a certain area.
  10. 10. Scratch-Off Panel Scratch-off panels are a fun feature that can be printed onto plastic cards. Scratch-offs are commonly used for concealing an access code, account number, pin number, or gaming number.
