Feeding pregnant cats • Pregnant cats need increased levels of nutrients from a specialised cat food. • Malnutrition can mean that kittens are born with a lower birth weight and might develop health issues. • A pregnant cat needs a higher energy intake than normal. 4. 4. 2. Mother and kitten socialisation • To ensure that kittens grow into healthy adult cats, they must be socialised with humans from a young age. • The first few weeks should include some interaction with people. • A kitten’s eyes and ears are fully functional at 4 weeks. This is when you can introduce them to new sights and smells. • Older kittens can then be introduced to other family pets Photo Credit: Merlijn Hoek via Compfight cc
  5. 5. 3. Kitten Nutrition • In the early stages, a mother’s milk is all your kitten needs. • In some cases, a mother may be absent or stops feeding kittens. This is when you need a kitten milk replacer like Di Vetelact. • During weaning (around 4 weeks) a kitten begins to eat solid food. At this point they need a premium kitten food in appropriate amounts according to their age and weight. Photo Credit: stirwise via Compfight cc

  7. 7. 5. Ideal Temperature • Kittens must always be kept warm and toasty! • Room temperature should be around 25 to 27°C. • Provide a comfortable nesting area away from draughts. • You can always use a heating pad but make sure that it is set low. There also needs to be an area left unheated so the kitten can lay on a cooler surface. Photo Credit: timoni via Compfight cc
