  2. 2. Introduction to Backup <ul><li>A backup is a copy of data. This copy can include important parts of the database, such as the control file and data files. </li></ul><ul><li>A backup is a safeguard against unexpected data loss and application errors. </li></ul><ul><li>If you lose the original data, then you can reconstruct it by using a backup. </li></ul>
  3. 3. <ul><li>There are two main types of database backups: </li></ul><ul><li>Full Backup </li></ul><ul><li>Incremental Backup </li></ul>
  4. 4. <ul><li>Full Backup: A full backup is used to create a copy of all data of entire database. It requires a large amount of storage space. </li></ul><ul><li>A database can restored relatively quickly using a full backup as it requires to simply copy the backup files. </li></ul>
  5. 6. <ul><li>Incremental Backup: An Incremental backup creates a copy of only the data that have changed since the last backup. </li></ul><ul><li>The Incremental backup only contains changes made to the database. </li></ul><ul><li>Incremental database requires small amount of storage space. However it may take more time to restore a database. </li></ul>
  6. 8. A database may be in two different states while performing a backup <ul><li>Offline Backups: An offline backup a backup that is performed after a database has been shut down. </li></ul><ul><li>The database administrator must schedule a time to shut down the database. </li></ul>
  7. 9. Online Backups <ul><li>An online backup is a backup that can be performed while a database is running. The database administrator does not have to shutdown the database. </li></ul><ul><li>The user do not need to disconnect . </li></ul>
  8. 10. Database Security <ul><li>Database security is a process of protecting database from intentional or accidental threats. It includes the security of hardware, software, people and data related to database. </li></ul><ul><li>The basic purpose of security is to minimize the losses that may occur due to different </li></ul><ul><li>Security threats. </li></ul>
  9. 11. <ul><li>Some important factors related to the security of database are as follows: </li></ul><ul><li>1:Theft and Fraud: Theft and fraud affect the database environment as well as entire organization. </li></ul><ul><li>The security checks must be applied in database environment so no person may commit such activities. </li></ul><ul><li>2:Loss of confidentiality: confidentiality is a requirement to keep data secret. </li></ul>
  10. 12. <ul><li>3: Loss of privacy: privacy is a requirement to protect people’s personal data. A problem in privacy may result in legal actions against the organization. </li></ul><ul><li>4:Loss of availability: it means that the data or the system may not be accessible. </li></ul><ul><li>It can result in serious damage to the financial performance of the organization. </li></ul>
