Maya Angelou

 2. 2. Background

Maya Angelou was born in 1928 to Vivian and Bailey Johnson, in St. Louis, Missouri. At the age of three her parents got divorced and her and her brother Bailey moved to Stamps, Arkansas where they lived with their Grandmother. When Maya was living with her grandmother she experienced what it was like to be a African-American in the southern states of America.

 3. 4. Background

She also learned from her grandmother whom they called “Momma”; practicality, common sense, and the ability to control one's own destiny that comes from constant hard work and courage, 'grace under pressure'". When Maya moved back in with her mother a while later she was raped by her mothers’ boyfriend, shortly after his trial he was found murdered.

 4. 5. Background

At the age of sixteen Maya gave birth to a boy, she named him Clyde. Due to these incidents Maya had to cope with a lot of pressure throughout her life. Her Auto Biographies such as “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” focuses on her life at this point in time. At one point she was working as a prostitute and madam.

 5. 6. Background

Her poetry is influenced by this immensely. Maya Angelou went on to be a civil rights activist and a speaker for Martin Luther King Jr. The Death of Martin Luther King Jr. shocked her hugely as it was on her birthday.

 6. 7. How She Relates To The Novel

Maya Angelou relates to the novel “Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry” because as the same as Cassie in the novel she grew up living in a racial discriminative state in which whites had the power and tried to mold the African-Americans lives into what they wanted. She also learned, that no matter what your skin colour everyone is equal. She was and objectors to unfairness due to race, like Cassie, when Mr. Simms attended to the white folks instead of her and her brother. Maya Angelou has written books about her life and “Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry” is also a novel about the tough times being an African-American women growing up in the southern states of America based on Mildred D. Taylor’s life.

 7. 8. I KNOW WHY THE CAGED BIRD SINGS

This book was written by Maya Angelou in 1969. It is about her early life as an African-American Women living in the southern states of America and the obstacles she had to face. One of them was that a white dentist would not treat Mayas tooth even though it was rotting and Momma had lent him money once during the depression. This book is very similar to Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, because it focuses on the harshness of racism and what the African-American families had to cope with during these times.
