  1. 1. “Hello, I’m Severn Suzuki speaking for E.C.O. –The Environmental Children’s Organisation. Weare a group of twelve and thirteen-year-oldsfrom Canada trying to make a difference:Vanessa Suttie, Morgan Geisler, Michelle Quiggand me. We raised all the money ourselves tocome five thousand miles to tell you adults youmust change your ways. Coming here today, Ihave no hidden agenda. I am fighting for myfuture. Losing my future is not like losing anelection or a few points on the stock market. Iam here to speak for all generations to come.I am here to speak on behalf of the starvingchildren around the world whose cries gounheard.I am here to speak for the countless animalsdying across this planet because they havenowhere left to go. We cannot afford to be notheard.I am afraid to go out in the sun now because ofthe holes in the ozone. I am afraid to breathe theair because I don’t know what chemicals are init.I used to go fishing in Vancouver with my daduntil just a few years ago we found the fish full ofcancers. And now we hear about animals and
  2. 2. plants going extinct every day “” vanishingforever. In my life, I have dreamt of seeing the greatherds of wild animals, jungles and rainforests fullof birds and butterflies, but now I wonder if theywill even exist for my children to see.Did you have to worry about these little thingswhen you were my age?All this is happening before our eyes and yet weact as if we have all the time we want and all thesolutions. I’m only a child and I don’t have all thesolutions, but I want you to realise, neither doyou!1. You don’t know how to fix the holes in ourozone layer.2. You don’t know how to bring salmon back upa dead stream.3. You don’t know how to bring back an animalnow extinct.4. And you can’t bring back forests that oncegrew where there is now desert. If you don’t know how to fix it, please stopbreaking it!Here, you may be delegates of yourgovernments, business people, organisers, reporters or politicians – but really you are
  3. 3. mothers and fathers, brothers and sister, auntsand uncles – and all of you are somebody’schild.I’m only a child yet I know we are all part of afamily, five billion strong, in fact, 30 millionspecies strong and we all share the same air, water and soil “” borders and governments willnever change that.I’m only a child yet I know we are all in thistogether and should act as one single worldtowards one single goal.In my anger, I am not blind, and in my fear, I amnot afraid to tell the world how I feel.In my country, we make so much waste, we buyand throw away, buy and throw away, and yetnorthern countries will not share with the needy.Even when we have more than enough, we areafraid to lose some of our wealth, afraid toshare. In Canada, we live the privileged life, with plentyof food, water and shelter “” we have watches, bicycles, computers and television sets. Two days ago here in Brazil, we were shockedwhen we spent some time with some childrenliving on the streets. And this is what one childtold us: “I wish I was rich and if I were, I would
  4. 4. give all the street children food, clothes, medicine, shelter and love and affection.”If a child on the street who has nothing, is willingto share, why are we who have everything stillso greedy?I can’t stop thinking that these children are myage, that it makes a tremendous differencewhere you are born, that I could be one of thosechildren living in the Favellas of Rio; I could be achild starving in Somalia; a victim of war in theMiddle East or a beggar in India.I’m only a child yet I know if all the money spenton war was spent on ending poverty and findingenvironmental answers, what a wonderful placethis earth would be!At school, even in kindergarten, you teach us tobehave in the world. You teach us:1. not to fight with others,2. to work things out,3. to respect others,4. to clean up our mess,5. not to hurt other creatures,6. to share – not be greedy. Then why do you go out and do the things youtell us not to do?
  5. 5. Do not forget why you’re attending theseconferences, who you’re doing this for “” we areyour own children. You are deciding what kind ofworld we will grow up in. Parents should be ableto comfort their children by saying “everythinggoing to be alright” , “we’re doing the best wecan” and “it’s not the end of the world”.But I don’t think you can say that to us anymore. Are we even on your list of priorities? My fatheralways says “You are what you do, not what yousay.”Well, what you do makes me cry at night. Yougrown ups say you love us. I challenge you, please make your actions reflect your words.Thank you.”
