  2. 2. Business Background <ul><li>The Body Shop was started by Dame Anita Roddick. She started the business to give herself and her daughters some livelihood while her husband was trekking across America. The original company logo and product labels were designed by an art student who was paid £20. The first shop the company opened was at 22 Kensington Gardens, Brighton. It opened next door to an undertaker, whose owner complained to the council because of the name of the store. </li></ul>
  3. 3. Purpose of Setting Up <ul><li>The purpose of setting up was to create a variety of 100% vegetarian cosmetics and skincare products at affordable prices. The Body Shop uses vegetables to create a wide range of products for body, face, hair and home. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Early Success <ul><li>The Body Shop experienced rapid growth, by expanding at a rate of 50% annually. The company was also heavily involved in banning animal testing for cosmetics in the UK. By 1978 the first overseas franchise was a kiosk in Brussels and new stores were opening at a rate of 2 per month. </li></ul>
  5. 5. Size <ul><li>The Body Shop has a total of 1,980 stores worldwide, serving over 77 million customers in 50 different markets in 25 different languages and across 12 time zones. </li></ul>
  6. 6. Employees <ul><li>The company has 7 people on the Board of Directors and have a total of 31,000 employees in 55 countries. </li></ul>
