History of Shuttle Discovery <ul><li>Received its name from the sailing ship RRS Discovery, the last wooden three-masted ship of the British Fleet. </li></ul><ul><li>It was the third orbiter built by NASA and has had countless upgrades since it was first sent to space over 20 years ago. </li></ul>
  3. History (continued) <ul><li>Has been on 34 separate missions to space </li></ul><ul><li>Most missions have involved research and assembly of the International Space Station </li></ul><ul><li>One of the most trusted shuttles in the NASA fleet </li></ul>
  4. Return to Space <ul><li>On July 4th, 2006, Shuttle Discovery was sent into space as a part of the Return to Flight mission after the Columbia disaster. </li></ul><ul><li>This would be the shuttles second Return to Space mission, the first following the Challenger disaster. </li></ul>

Problems <ul><li>When taking of and throughout the flight, some problems occurred </li></ul><ul><ul><li>3 seconds after take-off, a bird struck the shuttle causing minor damage </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Pieces of the heat shield began to fall off that would be required to make a safe return to the atmosphere </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Pieces of protective foam began to fall off, similar to what happened during the Columbia disaster </li></ul></ul>
  8. Return to Earth <ul><li>After its launch on July 4 th , 2006, it returned to earth July 17 th , 2006, at 3:36 p.m. </li></ul><ul><li>The mission was successful and every member of the crew returned home safely </li></ul>
