Overview <ul><li>The advertising and marketing services industry in the U.S. includes over 35,000 companies </li></ul><ul><li>The demand for advertising comes from businesses that sell consumer products, entertainment, financial services, technology and telecommunications </li></ul><ul><li>The average American child may view as many as 40,000 television commercials every year </li></ul><ul><li>In 2001, the overall annual revenue for just teenage advertisement was $172 billion </li></ul>
  3. 3. Where Advertisements are Found <ul><li>Television </li></ul><ul><li>Internet </li></ul><ul><li>Food products </li></ul><ul><li>Schools </li></ul><ul><li>Newspapers </li></ul><ul><li>Magazines </li></ul><ul><li>Billboards </li></ul><ul><li>Transportation services </li></ul>
  4. 4. Different Types of Advertisements <ul><li>Entertainment such as movies, music, television, shows </li></ul><ul><li>Technology such as cell phones, ipods, and laptops </li></ul><ul><li>Food products such as cereal, protein bars and other healthy foods that appeal to the public </li></ul>

Operations of Advertising <ul><li>A contract starts with a client making a proposal to an advertising firm </li></ul><ul><li>The agency learns of the client’s objective and develops a broad strategy to accomplish a successful campaign </li></ul><ul><li>Many advertisements include celebrities, yet it can also include ideas of “real people” who have tried out the product </li></ul>

Legislation <ul><li>The debate about children’s advertising has prompted legislation over the years </li></ul><ul><li>Members of congress are trying to limit advertising time on children’s programming by developing bills about educational content of programming </li></ul><ul><li>They want to set examples on important matters to the children rather than unnecessary advertisements. </li></ul>

Industry Position <ul><li>In order to gain the trust of viewers, advertisers need to have effective and honest advertising </li></ul><ul><li>Parents must take responsibility by monitoring what their children are watching and educate them to be more responsible </li></ul><ul><li>For example, parents should keep their kids from watching alcohol promoting commercials and other adult contents </li></ul>

A Growing Concern <ul><li>Because of unhealthy food commercials, people are becoming fat as they want the food that appeals to them </li></ul><ul><li>The goal of the advertising companies is to promote the product in the best way, even if it is not the best for you </li></ul><ul><li>For example, the Kraft brand has limited advertising of some of its less nutritious products like Kool-Aid and Oreos from all sources </li></ul>

How Teenagers are Exposed to Advertising <ul><li>“ Buzz and Street Marketing” </li></ul><ul><li>The companies give the new products to the “cool” kids in the community and they wear or use the product </li></ul><ul><li>This attracts other kids by word of mouth to now want to buy the product </li></ul><ul><li>Also, in schools and on the internet, there are little to no websites without advertising on them. </li></ul>

Advertising Tricks and Techniques <ul><li>Some companies trick you into believing they offer a better value. </li></ul><ul><li>Marketers put artwork, fantasy lives, dreams, and certain figures that attract kids to wanting the product. </li></ul><ul><li>Make products seem like they are the best for their children so that they give into the quilt that they have since some parents are not always around. </li></ul><ul><li>They want the best product to make their kids happy when they are not at home. </li></ul>

Good Advertisements <ul><li>A good advertisement connects the customer with the product </li></ul><ul><li>A good ad tells the consumers why it is the best thing that is being sold </li></ul><ul><li>Most good ads use a real scenario to show how the product is used </li></ul><ul><li>A good advertisement is clear to convey the message to the audience </li></ul><ul><li>Very presentable and attracts people to the advertisement </li></ul>

Bad Advertisements <ul><li>If the advertisement does not produce a sale or get the message out there, it is considered to be a “failure” </li></ul><ul><li>When the ad does not offer reasons to reach the demands of the audience </li></ul><ul><li>No one benefits from the message </li></ul><ul><li>Not very creative or monotone </li></ul>
