  3. 3. Surprising Fact Since 1774, tsunamis have resulted in the deaths of: West Coast East Coast 403 334
  4. 4. Types of Tsunamis • • • • • Submarine landslide tsunamis Landslide tsunamis Meteo-tsunamis Plate tectonic tele-tsunamis Asteroid/comet impact tsunamis
  5. 5. Characteristics • 90% of tsunamis are related to earthquakes • Can travel 500-600 miles an hour • Water recedes right before a tsunami hits, damaging boats and ships

  7. 7. Destruction Caused by Tsunamis
  8. 8. Loss of Life and Property Potential for loss of life and property from natural disasters is huge Year Event Lives Lost Cost $ 2012 Hurricane Sandy 300 68 Billion 2005 Hurricane Katrina 1,800 81 Billion 2011 Japan Tsunami 16,000+ 300 Billion
  9. 9. Be Prepared • Preparation is key in preventing loss of life • Most deaths are a result of not being prepared for a disaster that occurs • Having equipment and supplies suited for specific situations is critically important • We have designed a survival kit customized for a tsunami emergency and/or extreme flooding.
  10. 10. Tsunami Kit Requirements • Target consumers are individual households or businesses in potentially affected areas • Each kit should be capable of supporting 6 individuals for 4 days as most rescues occur within that time frame • Able to keep individuals alive on water or land
  11. 11. Tsunami Survival Kit
  12. 12. Kit Specifications • Dimensions will be approximately 2’ x 4’ x 3’ so it can be transported by one or two persons • The container will be waterproof • The container will have built-in pontoons so it will float even when full
  13. 13. Life raft for 6 people • A life raft supports 6 people and emergency provisions • It is self inflating • It is easily seen by rescue personnel
  14. 14. Life Jackets • Life jackets provide support for people even if unconscious • They are easy to put on • One-size-fits-all to accommodate children
  15. 15. Food • Survival food for 6 people for about 4 days • Readily eaten • Readily available
  16. 16. Sea Water Filter • Provides an emergency ration of water for 6 people • Converts sea water into drinkable water
  17. 17. First Aid Kit and Other Items • Off the shelf first aid kit • Utensils • Radio • Flashlight
  18. 18. East Coast Tsunami • Risk of a large tsunami hitting the East Coast is small, but tangible • Devastation may be large because of population • Underwater cliffs off the coast of Virginia can cause an underwater landslide • Coastal areas need to be prepared as there may be little warning • Be Prepared!
