Looking at existing documentaries
The type of documentary I will be producing is about a local artist, Frank Styles. He does spray painting
around Sunderland and local areas. The type of documentaries I will be looking at are artists who do
spray painting and graffiti or documentaries about spray painting and graffiti in general.
'Beyond The Wall' | A Documentary on Graffiti | 2018
https://youtu.be/1Qd4CFBOO6w?feature=shared
Throughout the documentary there are cinematic shots of the different graffiti the spray painters have
created at a local skate park. It has an insight into what graffiti can create and impact on the community
as it is a type of art that is shamed. Talks about how people who are graffitiing are classed as
“vandalizing” even though they are creating art and are a nice group of people. These people are self-
taught and might not have stayed in education. They paint their name on their graffiti, so people know
who created that type of art, and people also know their name.
They interviewed a local young spray painter graffiti artist who is based in London. They have shown
how young people have been getting into it from a youthful age. He talks about how hard it is to get into
spray painting as it is not as easy as people would think.
There is also an interview with a shop owner, he states that he gets blamed for selling spray painting as
he is ‘encouraging’ these young people to ‘vandalize’ the local area. The shop owner understands why,
and the concept of these young people spray painters, he mentions that these designs they create are
thought out they think about the colors, themes, designs. People would not understand this community
unless you are part of it or are interested in it. These art pieces are an expression of what they are
feeling.
The target audience this documentary is aimed at is for people who are interested in graffiti and street
art. This audience who would watch would be interested to know where it all started, the process of
creating the art and the final product. This audience would not be shaming people for creating this art,
they would appreciate it and how it can make the local area look beautiful with the assorted colors, the
messages that can be behind the wall art. The age group that would be interested in this documentary
would be 16-25. This is because I feel like people would start graffiti art young as someone, they know
would have gotten them into it.
The type of audience who would not watch this documentary is people in the older generation as they
would find it disrespectful as some of the buildings, they are painting on would have been there for a
long time, and that building could have been an important part of their childhood, and they would not
appreciate the youth spray-painting them.
The message of this documentary is to not judge people who do graffiti spray-painting because even
though it can be illegal (if you do not have permission) people are expressing themselves through art.
They are creating art in places that they feel would need it. This could be skate parks (common place
because of how diverse a skate park can be), a building that represents some part of culture or a well-
known identity, spray painting it will make people remember it and always refer to it as the artwork
when they see it or talk about it.
There are loads of distinct reasons why people would spray paint and it is not just vandalism, it is more
than that. There are loads of several types of graffiti art and in this documentary, they are talking about
more complex art rather than worded, not thought-out art.
The camera angles and shots fit well with this documentary as they show all the various aspects of being
a graffiti artist, the positives, and negatives. There are a lot of montages of the streets of London,
various graffiti art, locations of places they have graffitied. They have only done two interviews, but they
are getting two different perspectives; the artist and the shop seller. This also shows how they are in
different generations but they both understand and are not against it.
How Graffiti is Changing the Face of Art | Duality: A Graffiti Story |
Documentary Central
https://youtu.be/L_idJMzAPpo?feature=shared
At the start they show credits and information about graffiti at the initial stages of graffiti and where it
all started.
They interview an artist and how he was living two different lives. During the day he works at night he
creates art. He claims it is addicting to have your name on a piece of art that you have created and loads
of people will see. This shot is a ‘wide angle’ we cannot clearly see him (could be for identity reasons or
age), but we can see some insight to what his room looks like, could be some potential inspiration. He
did illegal graffiti, but it gave him credibility. He talks about how there is an “opportunity to bridge the
gap, from being an illegal graffiti artist to doing commercial work for big companies.”
Interviewing a second person and he says that the police are their enemies. What I am learning already
is that there are diverse types of graffiti artists. My client for my project has his own business and does
painting with permissions and creates more Brightful and joyful art. These people have more darker art,
that can be because of how they have grown up and their emotions they feel.
During this documentary they have more people to interview, those who want to keep their identity
private and those who do not want to keep their identity private. They have all mentioned that they
want to be seen in their city, using graffiti, and putting their name on their work is a way they can be
seen. One has described “a city having no graffiti is a city with no soul.” They are showing the different
text styles and what they are named, and how it can make an impact on their work, depending on which
one they use. This shows the thought process of the different artists.
This documentary has a lot of interviews that are wide angled shots. There are a lot of montages of the
different graffiti art and locations. Having these interviewers helps see why they have spray painting and
their inspirations.
From watching these two documentaries on graffiti artists around England, you get to see the different
artwork, locations and their reasonings for creating wall art. We get to see an insight into their creative
process and their passion. Even though most of it might be illegal they have good reasoning and are
doing creative designs. As the young people who have been interviewed are young boys, doing wall art
is a better ‘crime’ than other crimes people their age are doing. This could be a way they have escaped a
life full of crime. This could not be the reasoning for why they have into graffiti art, but it is a reason to
consider.
Exit through the gift shop
This documentary was published on 5th
March 2010, and it shadows British graffiti streets from artist
Banksy. His artwork is worldwide; he contacts Thierry Guetta, who creates videos for underground art in
Los Angeles. He captures the escapades and is transformed into an art dubbed “Mr. Brainwash.” This
documentary captures what might be fake blurs, as modern art and celebrity are put under the
microscope.
This documentary was directed by Banksy himself and was nominated 8 times!
The documentary I will be creating will be like this one, because I am also documenting someone’s
artwork not just graffiti in general.
I was not able to watch this documentary because I did not have an subscription for the plateforms it is
produced on.
Evaluation
After watching these documentaries, I know what type of shots to include. I want to include a wide shot
interview; cinematic shots of the artwork Frank have created. I want to include some shots of
Sunderland and the Northeast in general to show how the city looks with and without graffiti art.
I feel like I have more of an understanding of graffiti artists and the meaning of why they create the art. I
also have more of an understanding of the different people who are involved in graffiti art; there are
people who do it for fun, expression and there are some who have done that but want to create a more
well-known name by creating art for businesses or making themselves their own business.
