put things back to how they should be. Once they’ve finished, there’s often some mess that’s left
behind which is completely normal.
Dust, paint splatters and heavy tools on your flooring are just some of the things that you should
expect when having builders in. The builders typically do an excellent job of making things look great
and getting the job done to a high level. Our cleaning checklist is designed to welcome in the latest

always good to check and make sure everything is working as it should be because if you encounter
any problems early on, it’s much easier to get them resolved at this point than later down the line.
We’ve collated a list of things that you should check to make sure you’re happy and satisfied with the
work that’s been done in your property. It’s a win-win!
Builders Cleaning Checklist – Tasks For All Rooms
To get your home looking like new there are plenty of tasks that can be transferred from all rooms.
We’ve laid it out in this format to make it easy for whichever rooms you’re tackling in your home, so
follow the below for an easy and great clean!

Precautions to Take
When cleaning your home, you’ll need to make sure of a few things before you get started. We’ve
pulled together all the useful information to make sure you’ve got the right things checked before
starting the clean.
Can You Pull The Furniture Out Safely?
If not, consider asking someone to help you. Although this isn’t mandatory, it helps you get behind
things like the sofa to get rid of any dust that’s on those hidden skirting boards and the flooring.
Is The Step Ladder in Full Working Condition?
Safety is the number one priority, so make sure that the step ladder is fully working. To test this,
unfold the step ladder and make sure that it feels sturdy. If it feels safe, and you can stand on the
bottom step with no concerns, it’ll be good to go. Make sure that it’s all locked together!
Is There Any Rubbish in The Room?
If there’s any rubbish or mess in the room, take this out to the dustbin. By having rubbish in the room
it only makes things more difficult for you and it can pose a potential trip hazard.
Are There Any Important Electrics?
Your ceiling may have some important electrics, therefore it’s important to make sure you don’t risk
damaging them. Some examples of these are:
• Fire alarm
• Burglar alarm

• Carbon monoxide detector.
These usually live on the ceiling or in the corner of the room. Whilst you’re completing the clean, it’s
important to make sure you don’t pose risk to them. Don’t use these as leverage when you’re on the
ladder and be careful around them when dusting!
Is There The Ability to Open a Window?
If it’s not raining outside, opening a window is a great way to get some fresh air into your home. This
will help to blow away any dust particles that end up in the air, helping to prevent dust from landing
elsewhere in the room.
It also helps if you’re using cleaning chemicals. Some cleaning products have strong smells that can
give people a headache, so opening a window helps to keep a constant flow of fresh air to keep you
safe from any headaches.

How to Perform The Clean
Once you’re ready to go you’ll be able to get the clean underway. Let’s make your home look as
good as can be!
There are a few tools you’ll need to do the job:
• Hoover
• Microfibre cloths (one slightly damp)
• Glass cleaner
• All-purpose polish
• Dustpan and brush
• Step ladder
• Feather duster.
Take Any Objects Out of The Way
If you’ve got any ornaments or objects in the room, move these to one side or take them out of the
room. You’ll be able to clean the surfaces much more quickly when there’s nothing in your way and
you’ll remove any risk of knocking them over.
Whilst you’re moving them out of the room, use a damp microfibre cloth and wipe them down. This
will remove any dust on them and make sure they’re clean before you put them back.

Dusting The Ceiling
The ceiling often collects dust through static electricity, and due to the colour often being white it’s
hard to see the dust that’s up there. As well as this, spiders like to set up cobwebs in the corner and
these can catch dust too.
Using the step ladder, position yourself so you can safely reach the ceiling without having far to
reach. You’ll need to move the step ladder around the room as you go so try to position yourself
where you can tackle different sections of the room. Make sure to tackle any corners too, as these
are where the cobwebs are most likely to be.
Continue Dusting The High Surfaces
Take a look around the room from where you’re currently positioned. Is there any furniture that is
quite tall that meets your eye level? If so, use the step ladder to dust the top of them. Some
examples of these higher areas can be:
• Tops of bookshelves
• Wall-mounted shelves
• Any framed pictures/mirrors
• Lighting fixtures.
It’s important to make sure these are dusted, especially the tops of them. These are the areas that
are usually missed so it’s a great opportunity to get them dusted while you have the step ladders at
hand. Head to these areas and use a damp microfibre cloth to pick up any dust that’s on top of them.
Cleaning Lampshades

Whilst you’ve got the step ladders out, use a lint roller to get any dust off the lampshades. This is a
great and easy way to remove any dust from sitting on your lampshades and helps to keep them
looking like new.
If you don’t have a lint roller, taking the lampshade off the light will allow you to use a hoover. Gently
hoover the surface of the lampshade to get them looking like new before putting them back.
Dust From The Top Down
Once you’ve finished dusting the top of the higher areas and all the other areas you can reach by
hand, put the step ladders to one side and continue dusting. Go from the higher surfaces and
continue to work your way down, as this means any dust that falls will land on a surface that you’ll be
cleaning shortly afterwards.
Using a damp (nearly dry) microfibre cloth will help the cloth to pick up the most dust and work more
efficiently, maximising the dust it picks up Continue to do this until you’re at the floor of the room.
Once you’ve reached this point, use the damp cloth to wipe down the skirting boards and remove
any dust on them.
Hoover The Curtains
If you’re able to take the curtains off the rail, do so and lay them flat on the floor. Using the hoover
(we advise the hand attachment), go over the curtains to pull away any dust that’s built up over time.
If you can’t take them down, there’s a really easy way to hoover them whilst they’re still hanging.
Have your hoover in one hand and a cushion in the other and the cushion on the other side of the
curtain. Use the hand attachment on the front of the curtain to make it feel just like a carpet, except
vertical! When reaching higher up the curtain, make sure to use the step ladder to keep safe.
Dust the Blinds
If you have blinds in the room, use the damp microfibre cloth to wipe through all of the individual
slats to take the dust off of them. Blinds are like dust magnets and it’s very difficult to see if they are
dusty. If you look at them horizontally in the light you’ll be able to see the bits of dust on them that
you wouldn’t usually see.

Wipe Down All Doors And Frames
Dust lands on any surface, whether it’s horizontal or vertical. Whilst you’re dusting the room and
you’ve got a damp microfibre cloth at hand, wipe the doors and all the frames surrounding them.
This will help you to remove all the dust from the room in one go, so it’s nice and easy to get a great
clean!
Hoover/Wipe Furniture
There are plenty of different things in your home you’ll be able to use the hoover on. If you have
furniture that’s fabric, these are great to use a hoover on. Things like a sofa, chair or bed will be the
perfect bits of furniture to hoover. Be careful that the hoover isn’t too powerful, or you don’t cause
any damages or tears!
For things that aren’t fabric, use the damp microfibre cloth to clean any dirt or marks away. Most
surfaces will be safe to do this on, such as leather and wooden tabletops. If you have any glass
tables or counters use the glass cleaner with a dry microfibre cloth to clean.
Make sure to wipe the surfaces dry once you’re finished to prevent any marks remaining!
Hoover The Floor
Dust will most likely have fallen onto the floor at this point, so it’s important to get this hoovered up.
Before you do the hoovering, take any rugs outside and waft them. You’ll get rid of most of the dust
and bits in the rug this way, preventing your hoover from filling up and keeping as much dust out of
your home as possible.
If you have a carpeted floor, it’s advised to go over this a couple of times in different directions to
disturb the fibres of the carpet and bring all the bits up. If you have a hardwood floor, you’ll be able to
whiz over the floor with the hoover. Use the dustpan and brush to easily get rid of anything that’s in
those hard to reach places, such as corners of the room.
If you can, pull any furniture out and hoover both underneath and behind. These areas often get
missed with a typical clean, so whilst you’re doing a deep clean it’s the perfect time to tackle them.

Polish All Glossy/Plastic Areas
Using some spray polish and a microfibre cloth (a dry one is fine for this task), wipe over any areas
of the room that are plastic or glossy. This helps to restore them to their normal shine and make your
room a little brighter. Some surfaces to clean are:
• Windowsills
• Mirrors
• Picture frames
• Skirting boards
• Radiators
• Shelves
• Cabinets.
If there’s anywhere you see in the room that could do with a wipe over to give it a bit more shine, go
for it! All-purpose polish is designed to be safe for your home and shouldn’t result in any damages. If
you’re unsure, check what surfaces your polish is safe on.
Take a Final Walk Around The Room
Walk around the room and make sure you’re happy with all areas. This will help to capture any areas
that may have been missed, so it’s important to do this and make sure you’re 100% happy and if
you’re not, you’ve got all the cleaning gear to get this sorted. Some areas to focus on are:
• The skirting boards in the corner of the room

• Lighting fixtures on the ceiling
• The top of door frames
• Underneath windowsills.
There are plenty more, so try and catch yourself out. You could ask a friend or family member to try
and find an area of the room that isn’t cleaned as a challenge, and make some fun of it! Give them 5
minutes to inspect the room and if they find anywhere that isn’t cleaned, they’ll get a reward. It puts
the fun into cleaning!
Rinse Out The Damp Microfibre Cloth
Once you’re at the end of the clean, rinse out the microfibre cloth with warm water. Any dust that has
been collected by the cloth will still be on there so you’ll want to get it gone before it risks being
spread back around your home.
Rinse the cloth and let it hang dry, before wafting it outside. This helps to make sure that any dust
the cloth has picked up is removed before being brought back into your home.

Specific Tasks – Living Room
When it comes to the living room, this is the area that you’ll most likely be hosting guests and having
people over. For this reason it’s important to make sure the living room is looking clean and tidy,
guaranteeing great reactions from your friends and family. Below has a couple of things that you’ll
need to take into account for your clean.
Fireplace
If you have a fireplace in your living room, this is a hotbed for dust. To clean inside the fireplace,
make sure the fire is turned off completely. Some people have a gas fire, therefore you need to make
sure there is no chance of it being turned on.
Once you’re sure, use the feather duster to clean the inside of the fireplace of any dust. If you have a
log fire, consider turning these logs around and moving them to disturb the dust from where it’s sat.

Usually turning the fireplace on will help to get rid of dust, but turning a fireplace on requires a lot of
patience and will mean it needs supervising until it’s finished burning. To quickly dust the fireplace
the above will get it cleaned.
Lamps
Make sure all lamps are dusted from top to bottom, especially inside the lamp! When dusting the
bulb, make sure it’s turned off and cool to prevent risk of injuring yourself.
What Should I Check is Working?
There are a number of things to take a look at in the living room to make sure they’re working. The
common ones are below!
Plug Sockets
Test with a phone charger and make sure all the plug sockets are correctly wired up. If they aren’t,
it’s much easier to share this with the builders and have this resolved than if you notice the problem
further down the line.
Fireplace
If you’ve had a new fireplace installed, use it! Make sure it’s working just as it should be. If it’s not
you’ll be able to get hold of the builders and explain that there’s a problem, which they’ll be able to
come and take a look at.

Specific Tasks – Bedroom
The bedroom is a room where you’ll spend a lot of time, which is why it’s important to make sure it’s
safe. If there’s too much dust in the air you can risk breathing it in during your sleep which can be
dangerous for you.
Take Extra Care When Dusting
You’ll need to take extra care when dusting in this room as it’s important to keep healthy and safe.
There are a few ways to do this:
Dusting everything twice will help to prevent any missed areas. The best way to do it is to go over
the entire room and make a mental note of the areas you’ve been over. This will help you to capture
any areas you’ve missed the second time around and understand how to properly perform the clean.
You can use the challenge again and see if anyone can find any missed areas!

Use The Bed as Storage
When you’re moving things, such as picture frames or ornaments, use the bed as a storage place.
The bed will be safe for the time being and doesn’t risk causing any scratches or anything like this.
By moving things out of the way it’s much easier to clean the surfaces, therefore you can expect a
much quicker and easier clean.
Should That Live There?
If you’re moving aftershave bottles or hair spray, think about where it’s been living and if there’s
somewhere better for it to go. It’s a great opportunity to get your home looking clean and tidy, so take
a look around when you’re putting things back and think where they could better live.
Change The Bedding
Once the work has been finished in the bedroom, change the bedding. Dust will no doubt have
landed on the sheets and will be very difficult to see, so change the bedding to get rid of any dust.
Before throwing the sheets into the washing machine, hold them outside the window and waft them
in the air. A lot of the dust will come off the sheets from this and will prevent it from landing
elsewhere in your home!
You should change the bedding after you’ve dusted the room, but before you hoover the floor. This
helps to minimise the amount of dust that could land on your bedding and prevents any extra dust
from staying in the room.
What Should I Check Is Working?
In the bedroom, there are a couple of things you’ll need to check to make sure it’s all working as it
should be.
Plug Sockets

The bedroom is where you’ll most likely charge your devices. Make sure that they’re all working by
plugging your phone or a device on charge and seeing if it starts charging. If any plugs don’t start to
charge your phone, you’ll know they aren’t properly wired in.
Check All Built-In Furniture
If you’ve had a wardrobe installed that’s built into your wall, check that it’s all working just as it should
be. A few things to check are:
• The doors operate as they should
• The drawers slide out properly
• The hanging racks are installed properly and are sturdy
• There are no loose shelves.
Make sure you’re happy and that it’s all working just as you’d expect it to. If it isn’t then it needs to be
looked at before damages can happen, and just after installation is the perfect time for these
problems to be resolved.
Windows
If you’ve just had an extension or you’ve had some new windows installed, check that the windows
open properly and work as you’d expect them to. Once a window is installed it can be tweaked
slightly if it’s not quite aligned, so make sure it is! A few things to look out for are:
• The window opens fully
• The window doesn’t look wonky

• The handles of the window don’t catch the frame when opening.
If you’re noticing any of these problems, get in touch with the company who installed them. They’ll
be able to make any slight tweaks and amendments if required to get the windows working just as
they should be.

The bathroom is a very important part of any household. A clean bathroom is a great room to be in
and helps people feel comfortable using the room for when they need to. If you’ve recently
renovated the bathroom, or you’ve had some work done, below are a few things you’ll need to do to
make sure it’s clean and tidy.
Wipe Down All Holders

Several different holders in the bathroom will collect dust. These are often missed during a clean, so
when cleaning once the builders are gone it’s a great opportunity to get these cleaned. Some
examples of holders are:
• Soap holders
• Towel racks
• Toothbrush holders
• Toilet roll holders
• Shelves.
Take a look around the bathroom and see if there are any holders that you can see. If so, wipe them
with the damp microfibre cloth. Don’t forget to rinse and wash your toothbrush from any dust before
you use it!
Wash Towels
If there are any towels in the room whilst the builders have been working, these should be washed.
Dust and other particles can land on the towels and get stuck, which subsequently make their way
onto you whilst you’re getting dry and then around your home.
Washing the towels gets rid of any dust and helps to keep the bathroom, and the rest of your house,
dust-free for longer.
Clean All Surfaces
The bathroom is a little different from your typical room in the house. Most surfaces are designed to
hold water, which often makes them a plastic/acrylic material. To clean these surfaces you’ll need to

use some warm soapy water and a cloth to wipe down all of the sides. Use a sponge too to get rid of
any stubborn marks and let this dry.
Once you’re finished, use the all-purpose cleaning spray and a microfibre cloth to polish the surface
and get it looking like new.
Use Glass Cleaner on Shower Walls
If you’ve got a shower with glass walls, use the glass cleaner to clean these effectively. This not only
helps you to get the glass looking like new and streak-free, but you’ll also be able to easily see if
there’s any paint splatters or droplets on the glass that you may not have noticed before.
If you’ve had your bathroom recently renovated, you’ll want to make sure it’s all working just as it
should be. Below are a few things you’ll want to check to make sure you’re happy that the bathroom
is working as it should be.
Flush The Loo
Make sure the toilet is working exactly how you’d expect it to be! If when you flush it takes a long
time to fill up, or it doesn’t quite seem right, it’s best to get this checked out and looked into.
Check All Drains Work
The best way to make sure all of the drains are working as they should be is to fill the basin where
the drain is. A running tap may seem fine to the drain, but when it’s backed up it may start to show
any problems that it may be having. Put the plug into the drain and let the taps run for 10-15
seconds to collect a good amount of water. Pull the plug and make sure it drains as you’re expecting
it to!
If you’ve got a wet room, let the shower pour for a minute or two and see how the water drains.
Sometimes the floor isn’t quite levelled properly and water can make its way to other parts other

room, rather than to where the drain is. Keep a close eye on the water and how it dries/drains from
your floor as you use the room and make a note of any abnormalities you may notice.
Check All Cupboards/Doors Work
If you’ve got any cupboards in the bathroom, make sure they’re working just as they need to be. The
cupboard doors will be opened and closed quite often so it’s important to check and make sure
they’re working properly!
If you’ve got a walk-in shower, or a moving door into the shower, check this is working as you’d
expect. Make sure there’s no resistance and that it doesn’t move too easily to make sure you’re
happy with how it works and you’re confident it’s been installed properly.
Specific Tasks – Kitchen

The kitchen is a room where you’ll prepare food, which makes it even more crucial to get it properly
cleaned. You’ll need to make sure there’s no dust, especially not on the surfaces where you’ll be
preparing food, to help you keep safe when eating.
Dust Twice And Sanitise
It’s a catchy saying and should help you to get things right when you’re performing a clean. Dusting
the room twice will help you make sure you’re not missing any areas that you’ve dusted, helping
make sure there’s minimal chance of dust staying behind.
Once you’ve dusted, sanitising the surfaces helps to kill off any harmful germs that may live on the
surfaces. This lowers the chances of you getting ill through eating, therefore making the room safer
to be in. Use a sanitising spray and spray all surfaces before wiping them clean with a microfibre
cloth.
Clean Inside The Cupboards
Cupboards should be wiped inside and out to make sure there’s no dust inside them. Once they’re
closed there’s little chance for dust to get inside, but when they’re first installed there’s the chance of
this happening. Use a damp microfibre cloth and wipe inside and outside the cupboards before
leaving them with the doors open to air dry before you fill them up.
There are a lot of moving parts in a kitchen, so it’s important to check and make sure it’s all working
properly before you get the kitchen filled up. With the cupboards being empty, it’s much easier for
repair work to be done by the builders.
Check All Cupboards and Drawers
The kitchen is full of cupboards and drawers that you’ll be filling up shortly. Before you do, make sure
that they all work as you’d expect. This can be done as part of the cupboard cleaning to help make it
even quicker and easier!

Turn on The Extractor Fan
Make sure the extractor fan works as it should be. A good way to test this is to boil the kettle and
pour yourself a cup of tea or coffee. While you can see physical steam coming from the mug, use
this and hold it up to the extractor fan to make sure that the steam is being pulled into the extractor
fan itself. You’ll also get a cuppa out of it!
If the fan is making any strange noises or sounds inconsistent with power, it may be worth getting
this looked at to make sure it’s all working as it should be.
Turn on The Oven
If you’ve had a new oven installed in your kitchen, turn it on to make sure it’s working properly. An
easy test to do is to turn the oven on and leave it for 10-15 minutes, seeing if it gets hot. If when you
open it you can feel the heat, it’s working as it should be!
An oven is an important tool in the preparation of safe food, therefore you need to make sure it’s
working as it should. If you’re not 100% sure it’s working correctly when you first start using it, it’s
worth raising the question to the builders who installed it.

What Should I do if...
Whenever you’ve had some work done in your property, it’s important to make sure that everything is
working properly. If there’s anything you notice that isn’t quite right, you may be able to tackle it and
clean it yourself. See below for some common What-Ifs!
I Find a Paint Splatter
If you find some paint has splattered somewhere you’re not expecting, it’s usually an easy resolution.
When painting a wall the only other areas that it could splatter on are often things like windows or
windowsills, which are fortunately very easy to clean.
Using a damp sponge with a scourer, wipe the surface with the sponge side to get the surface wet.
This will pick up some of the paint droplets and start to loosen the stubborn ones.
Once the surface is wet you’ll want to use the scouring side to scrub the surface. This will pull away
from the paint droplets and leave the surface looking clean. Use a damp microfibre cloth to wipe the
surface to make sure it’s clean and use some polish or glass cleaner to get the surface clean.
I Notice Some Cracks Appear

If you notice any cracks appear in the walls or areas that have recently been worked on, this can be
normal. Buildings can often take a year or so to properly settle, which means the plaster can
sometimes crack. Often this is completely normal and shouldn’t cause any worries to you.
The general rule of thumb is that if there is a crack that you can’t fit a £1 coin in width-ways, it’s okay.
Usually, building companies will offer a year review, allowing you to highlight any problems that may
have appeared in that time. They’ll then come and fill in the cracks where applicable and get things
looking as they should be.
If you do find there’s a crack that has appeared that is relatively wide, contact the building company
as soon as possible. They’ll be able to properly investigate the crack and any implications, advising
on the correct next steps to get it resolved and working as it should be.
If it’s a new extension to your property, or if it’s a new build, you should keep a close eye out for
cracks in the first year. The chances are you’ll be okay with a few little cracks in the plaster, but
make sure you’re keeping a close eye out for anything more sinister.
I Find Something Isn’t Working
If you’ve had something installed, such as a new oven and it’s not working properly then contact the
company who installed the products for you. They’ll be able to advise exactly what to do and
chances are they’ll come and take a look to see what the problem is and how to resolve it for you.
A lot of companies offer a guarantee, so if there’s something that doesn’t quite work as you’d be
expecting it to they’ll most likely come and resolve this without costing you a penny!

If not, consider asking someone to help you. Although this isn’t mandatory, it helps you get behind
things like the sofa to get rid of any dust that’s on those hidden skirting boards and the flooring.
Is The Step Ladder in Full Working Condition?
Safety is the number one priority, so make sure that the step ladder is fully working. To test this,
unfold the step ladder and make sure that it feels sturdy. If it feels safe, and you can stand on the
bottom step with no concerns, it’ll be good to go. Make sure that it’s all locked together!
Is There Any Rubbish in The Room?
If there’s any rubbish or mess in the room, take this out to the dustbin. By having rubbish in the room
it only makes things more difficult for you and it can pose a potential trip hazard.
Are There Any Important Electrics?
Your ceiling may have some important electrics, therefore it’s important to make sure you don’t risk
damaging them. Some examples of these are:
• Fire alarm
• Burglar alarm
• Carbon monoxide detector.

These usually live on the ceiling or in the corner of the room. Whilst you’re completing the clean, it’s
important to make sure you don’t pose risk to them. Don’t use these as leverage when you’re on the
ladder and be careful around them when dusting!
Is There The Ability to Open a Window?
If it’s not raining outside, opening a window is a great way to get some fresh air into your home. This
will help to blow away any dust particles that end up in the air, helping to prevent dust from landing
elsewhere in the room.
It also helps if you’re using cleaning chemicals. Some cleaning products have strong smells that can
give people a headache, so opening a window helps to keep a constant flow of fresh air to keep you
safe from any headaches.
How to Perform The Clean

Once you’re ready to go you’ll be able to get the clean underway. Let’s make your home look as
good as can be!
There are a few tools you’ll need to do the job:
• Hoover
• Microfibre cloths (one slightly damp)
• Glass cleaner
• All-purpose polish
• Dustpan and brush
• Step ladder
• Feather duster.
Take Any Objects Out of The Way
If you’ve got any ornaments or objects in the room, move these to one side or take them out of the
room. You’ll be able to clean the surfaces much more quickly when there’s nothing in your way and
you’ll remove any risk of knocking them over.
Whilst you’re moving them out of the room, use a damp microfibre cloth and wipe them down. This
will remove any dust on them and make sure they’re clean before you put them back.
Dusting The Ceiling

The ceiling often collects dust through static electricity, and due to the colour often being white it’s
hard to see the dust that’s up there. As well as this, spiders like to set up cobwebs in the corner and
these can catch dust too.
Using the step ladder, position yourself so you can safely reach the ceiling without having far to
reach. You’ll need to move the step ladder around the room as you go so try to position yourself
where you can tackle different sections of the room. Make sure to tackle any corners too, as these
are where the cobwebs are most likely to be.
Continue Dusting The High Surfaces
Take a look around the room from where you’re currently positioned. Is there any furniture that is
quite tall that meets your eye level? If so, use the step ladder to dust the top of them. Some
examples of these higher areas can be:
• Tops of bookshelves
• Wall-mounted shelves
• Any framed pictures/mirrors
• Lighting fixtures.
It’s important to make sure these are dusted, especially the tops of them. These are the areas that
are usually missed so it’s a great opportunity to get them dusted while you have the step ladders at
hand. Head to these areas and use a damp microfibre cloth to pick up any dust that’s on top of them.
Cleaning Lampshades
Whilst you’ve got the step ladders out, use a lint roller to get any dust off the lampshades. This is a
great and easy way to remove any dust from sitting on your lampshades and helps to keep them
looking like new.

If you don’t have a lint roller, taking the lampshade off the light will allow you to use a hoover. Gently
hoover the surface of the lampshade to get them looking like new before putting them back.
Dust From The Top Down
Once you’ve finished dusting the top of the higher areas and all the other areas you can reach by
hand, put the step ladders to one side and continue dusting. Go from the higher surfaces and
continue to work your way down, as this means any dust that falls will land on a surface that you’ll be
cleaning shortly afterwards.
Using a damp (nearly dry) microfibre cloth will help the cloth to pick up the most dust and work more
efficiently, maximising the dust it picks up Continue to do this until you’re at the floor of the room.
Once you’ve reached this point, use the damp cloth to wipe down the skirting boards and remove
any dust on them.
Hoover The Curtains
If you’re able to take the curtains off the rail, do so and lay them flat on the floor. Using the hoover
(we advise the hand attachment), go over the curtains to pull away any dust that’s built up over time.
If you can’t take them down, there’s a really easy way to hoover them whilst they’re still hanging.
Have your hoover in one hand and a cushion in the other and the cushion on the other side of the
curtain. Use the hand attachment on the front of the curtain to make it feel just like a carpet, except
vertical! When reaching higher up the curtain, make sure to use the step ladder to keep safe.
Dust the Blinds
If you have blinds in the room, use the damp microfibre cloth to wipe through all of the individual
slats to take the dust off of them. Blinds are like dust magnets and it’s very difficult to see if they are
dusty. If you look at them horizontally in the light you’ll be able to see the bits of dust on them that
you wouldn’t usually see.
Wipe Down All Doors And Frames

Dust lands on any surface, whether it’s horizontal or vertical. Whilst you’re dusting the room and
you’ve got a damp microfibre cloth at hand, wipe the doors and all the frames surrounding them.
This will help you to remove all the dust from the room in one go, so it’s nice and easy to get a great
clean!
Hoover/Wipe Furniture
There are plenty of different things in your home you’ll be able to use the hoover on. If you have
furniture that’s fabric, these are great to use a hoover on. Things like a sofa, chair or bed will be the
perfect bits of furniture to hoover. Be careful that the hoover isn’t too powerful, or you don’t cause
any damages or tears!
For things that aren’t fabric, use the damp microfibre cloth to clean any dirt or marks away. Most
surfaces will be safe to do this on, such as leather and wooden tabletops. If you have any glass
tables or counters use the glass cleaner with a dry microfibre cloth to clean.
Make sure to wipe the surfaces dry once you’re finished to prevent any marks remaining!
Hoover The Floor
Dust will most likely have fallen onto the floor at this point, so it’s important to get this hoovered up.
Before you do the hoovering, take any rugs outside and waft them. You’ll get rid of most of the dust
and bits in the rug this way, preventing your hoover from filling up and keeping as much dust out of
your home as possible.
If you have a carpeted floor, it’s advised to go over this a couple of times in different directions to
disturb the fibres of the carpet and bring all the bits up. If you have a hardwood floor, you’ll be able to
whiz over the floor with the hoover. Use the dustpan and brush to easily get rid of anything that’s in
those hard to reach places, such as corners of the room.
If you can, pull any furniture out and hoover both underneath and behind. These areas often get
missed with a typical clean, so whilst you’re doing a deep clean it’s the perfect time to tackle them.
Polish All Glossy/Plastic Areas

Using some spray polish and a microfibre cloth (a dry one is fine for this task), wipe over any areas
of the room that are plastic or glossy. This helps to restore them to their normal shine and make your
room a little brighter. Some surfaces to clean are:
• Windowsills
• Mirrors
• Picture frames
• Skirting boards
• Radiators
• Shelves
• Cabinets.
If there’s anywhere you see in the room that could do with a wipe over to give it a bit more shine, go
for it! All-purpose polish is designed to be safe for your home and shouldn’t result in any damages. If
you’re unsure, check what surfaces your polish is safe on.
Take a Final Walk Around The Room
Walk around the room and make sure you’re happy with all areas. This will help to capture any areas
that may have been missed, so it’s important to do this and make sure you’re 100% happy and if
you’re not, you’ve got all the cleaning gear to get this sorted. Some areas to focus on are:
• The skirting boards in the corner of the room
• Lighting fixtures on the ceiling

• The top of door frames
• Underneath windowsills.
There are plenty more, so try and catch yourself out. You could ask a friend or family member to try
and find an area of the room that isn’t cleaned as a challenge, and make some fun of it! Give them 5
minutes to inspect the room and if they find anywhere that isn’t cleaned, they’ll get a reward. It puts
the fun into cleaning!
Rinse Out The Damp Microfibre Cloth
Once you’re at the end of the clean, rinse out the microfibre cloth with warm water. Any dust that has
been collected by the cloth will still be on there so you’ll want to get it gone before it risks being
spread back around your home.
Rinse the cloth and let it hang dry, before wafting it outside. This helps to make sure that any dust
the cloth has picked up is removed before being brought back into your home.

If you notice any cracks appear in the walls or areas that have recently been worked on, this can be
normal. Buildings can often take a year or so to properly settle, which means the plaster can
sometimes crack. Often this is completely normal and shouldn’t cause any worries to you.
The general rule of thumb is that if there is a crack that you can’t fit a £1 coin in width-ways, it’s okay.
Usually, building companies will offer a year review, allowing you to highlight any problems that may
have appeared in that time. They’ll then come and fill in the cracks where applicable and get things
looking as they should be.
If you do find there’s a crack that has appeared that is relatively wide, contact the building company
as soon as possible. They’ll be able to properly investigate the crack and any implications, advising
on the correct next steps to get it resolved and working as it should be.
If it’s a new extension to your property, or if it’s a new build, you should keep a close eye out for
cracks in the first year. The chances are you’ll be okay with a few little cracks in the plaster, but
make sure you’re keeping a close eye out for anything more sinister.

If you’ve had something installed, such as a new oven and it’s not working properly then contact the
company who installed the products for you. They’ll be able to advise exactly what to do and
chances are they’ll come and take a look to see what the problem is and how to resolve it for you.
A lot of companies offer a guarantee, so if there’s something that doesn’t quite work as you’d be
expecting it to they’ll most likely come and resolve this without costing you a penny!
