  3. 3. 3 PROBLEM Current website structure represents BRIC as three separate silos, and does not allow BRIC to effectively share its multidisciplinary offerings to the community at large.
  4. 4. 4 RESEARCH STAKEHOLDER & EXPERT INTERVIEWS • Bring BRIC Mission & Brand to life • More visual content • Incorporate community voices & stories • Equal weight to all BRIC disciplines (including Education) • Make TV/video content more accessible • Highlight Celebrate Brooklyn • Make BRIC House a destination • Better cross marketing across audiences • Make call for support/donations more prominent • Make content browsing easier • More user friendly calendar • Better search capability • Improve site experience on iPad KEY LEARNINGS
  5. 5. 5 RESEARCH BRIC WEBSITE ANALYSIS One of the first things we performed was a heuristic evaluation of the site, which consists of evaluating the strength and quality if what is currently offered to users. We used the following heuristic principles for our assessment: 1) Findable: Can users easily locate that which they are seeking? NO 2) Clear: Is the path to task completion obvious and free of distraction? NO 3) Accessible: Can it be used via all expected devices? NO 4) Credible: Is your content updated in a timely manner? YES Please keep in mind that these principles are applied to the site through the lens of our perception of the various users intended for the site. Admittedly, the evaluation is done through the harshest lens possible—meaning we viewed all of the criteria as a user would knowing we have the ability as a user to go elsewhere. Understanding the user can and will go elsewhere to retrieve the information is imperative to improving the site for the user.

Which of the following are you interested in? How often do you look for events/activities using the following sources? How do you most frequently find out about events and programs in your community that interest you? • Respondents have a broad range of interests aligned with BRIC’s offerings • 60% of respondents use their desktop, and 55% use mobile devices, DAILY to discover new events/activities • They find out about events and programs in their communities primary through social media • Respondents look for arts and media events/programs primarily via Brooklyn based organizations
  10. 10. 10 • land on BRIC website through BRIC Newsletters • do not have cable or TV • are not aware of other class offerings outside media classes • have difficulty finding classes • do not know what Media Share is • find the vernacular across site unclear and confusing • are unclear about the meaning of top navigation tabs (Contemporary Art, Performing Arts, Community Media) • do not understand what BRIC House is We found that users frequently.... 13. 13. 13 RESEARCH TECHNICAL RESEARCH • Based on our research we found that most users currently prefer viewing BRIC desktop website over the mobile site • Many users have difficulties viewing current content on their iPad • According to several independent sources, mobile devices account for more than 10 percent of Web traffic, and these numbers are continually growing • Tablet design is closely aligned to desktop • The constraints imposed by tablets—small screens and relatively low bandwidth and processing power—make for better (faster and easier to navigate) websites even on desktop devices • Another advantage of focusing on tablet is that tablet interface incorporates touch interactions To bridge the gap between desktop and mobile we decided to begin designing for tablet first.
