DMI: Collecting Data
You now need to collect the data that you will use to try to find out if
your hypothesis is supported.
You have already decided what data you need to collect. Now you
need to think about how you are going to collect it.
You will need to consider the population size and determine a
sample size. You will need to decide which sampling method you
will use, and to justify your choice.
You will need to carefully identify potential sources of bias, and find
strategies to minimize the possibilities.
Once you have planned how to collect the data, you will need to go
out and collect it. This may involve measuring, researching, or
conducing questionnaires, depending on your area of investigation, and on your exact hypothesis.
You should design a data collection sheet on which you record your data. Depending on where you are going to be collecting data, this could either be on paper, or on a computer spreadsheet. The second part of your Data Management Investigation should contain a
description of how you collected your data. This should include your choice of
sample method and reasoning and strategies you employed to avoid bias. You should also submit the data itself, either as a table or as a spreadsheet.

There are 2000 students at my high school. For this
experiment, I decided that 40 would be a more than
sufficient sample size. I put a lot of consideration into my
sample size, in order, to reduce the amount of margin of
error and bias. Of course, any way I do this there will always
be a certain level of uncertainty but by carefully looking at
the population and picking my sample size I am able to have
more confidence in my results. Although having a larger
sample size would lead to more accurate results, I also
needed to weigh in the amount of time I have, the number of
willing participants, resources etc. Of course, since this
sample should represent the population, the entire school,
my sample size will be divided by 4 between grades 9,10,11
and 12 students and then divided again by 2 between male
and female students.
