Dattoli had an interest in pure sciences while growing up in Poughkeepsie, New York. While he was a student at the University of California, Berkeley studying marine biology, he wanted to find a way to use his passion in science to assist mankind. He returned to Poughkeepsie, excelled in Vassar College's biochemistry program, and earned a medical degree in 1984 from Mount Sinai School of Medicine (now the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai).
