- I am 8 years old, Nice spring day, running to school with my friend Adele, hardly making it to the art class. The teacher is not there, of course we love it, more time to play scream and run around the classroom. Finally the director comes, just by looking at her face we know something is not right, but we don’t know what. We don’t ask, children don’t ask questions in Poland, we must follow the orders and believe what we hear, period. She says we need to leave school and go straight home, do not stop anywhere. Nothing seems odd.
- Chernobyl! Nuclear explosion, what these words could possibly mean to a child? What this words meant to a citizen in a communist country? What really happened? How many people really died? What kind of impact will it have on an average person? Information served via government channels, were not the real infomration Being raised in such environment you have extra filter and sense on what is and is not the truth.
- Typilcal shopping in Socialistic Poland, you stood in a line very often hours, not knowing if there will be enough of goods for your family. Some people hired people to stay in line, that was a job. And some people always knew how to get things under the table and how to get through the back door.
- The view from my window, after 7 you can not go out of the house, otherwise you can get killed.
- Toilette paper X ammount of rolls a person!
- Car I grew up with. Trunk in front, engine in the back 5 of us, I was always in the middle I guess this is how I gre my elbows.
- First time on a plane, my mom thought she would die I was soooo excited I thought I would die
