  2. 2. Objectives <ul><li>Be able to learn and identify political, economic, entertainment, Record keeping, Agenda-Setting, social marketplace and sentry functions of a journalist. Help my peers have a better understanding of journalism. </li></ul>
  3. 3. Political <ul><li>Political journalism is a broad branch of journalism that includes coverage of all aspects of politics and political science, although the term usually refers specifically to coverage of civil governments and political power. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Cont. <ul><li>Trail, with Gonzo’s Wife </li></ul><ul><li>Among the media covering Senator John McCain Thursday at the Aspen Institute was Anita Thompson, the widow of Hunter S. Thompson, the legendary journalist who brought his gonzo style of personal reporting to politics in the 1970s for Rolling Stone. </li></ul>
  5. 5. Economic <ul><li>An economy is the realized social system of production, exchange, distribution, and consumption of goods and services of a country or other area. A given economy is the end result of a process that involves its technological evolution, civilization's history and social organization, as well as its geography, resource endowment, and ecology, among other factors. These factors give context, content, and set the conditions and parameters in which an economy functions. </li></ul>

  7. 7. Entertainment <ul><li>Entertainment journalism is an umbrella term used to describe all forms of journalism that focus on the entertainment business and its products. Like fashion journalism, entertainment journalism covers industry-specific news while targeting general audiences beyond those working in the industry itself. Common forms include television and film criticism, music journalism, video game journalism and celebrity coverage. </li></ul>

Bill Wright said Colt Rushton and Coleman got into an argument in the early morning hours Saturday over pictures Rushton had taken of Coleman inside the bowling alley. He said the argument continued outside, and that Coleman hit Rushton and a car as he was backing out of a parking space. </li></ul>
  9. 9. Record Keeping <ul><li>Setting a precedent for others to follow in the near future. Journalism reports records because they are like a type of history. </li></ul>
  10. 10. Cont. <ul><li>Nathan Adrian, Cullen Jones, Wildman-Tobriner and Matt Grevers won their relay heat in 3 minutes, 12.23 seconds, erasing the old mark of 3:12.46 set by the U.S. at the 2006 Pan Pacific championships in Victoria, British Columbia. </li></ul>
  11. 11. Agenda-Setting <ul><li>Agenda setting research has shown that there is a correlation between what the media deems important and salience in the public mind. In simpler terms, agenda setting claims that what the media finds important will eventually be mirrored in what people think are important. It is important to note that the notion of agenda setting is positive association between the media and the audience. From agenda setting stems the formation of public opinions and the distribution of pros and cons of a particular issue. “Agenda-setting shifts the focus of attention away from immediate effects on attitudes and opinions to longer term effects on cognitions” (Protess & McCombs 1991). The notion of agenda setting relies on the transfer of issues from the media to the public. </li></ul>
  12. 12. Cont. <ul><li>Rihanna has recently set a hair precedent. Over the past few years, and months she has changed the world with hair different hairstyles. </li></ul>
  13. 13. Social & Marketplace <ul><li>The press provides the forum in which all sorts of ideas are presented; it becomes the marketplace of ideas. If the audience is concerned about the environment and conveys this concern through the press, perhaps, something will be done. </li></ul>
  14. 14. Cont. <ul><li>Myspace teams up with local Dekalb officers to help solve a missing person case. </li></ul><ul><li>Ebay is a example of marketplace because they use things from the market and have a broad way of selling there items. </li></ul>
  15. 15. Sentry Functions <ul><li>The press watches society's horizons. The medias responsibility to keep the public informed of current and upcoming problems. </li></ul>

Defining and identifying each situation made it clear to remember what which function is and does.
