What Is Augmented Reality (AR)?
 Augmented Reality (AR) is a
growing area in virtual reality
research.
 Basically augmented reality (AR)
is develop to tackle virtual object
or imaginary object which
doesn’t exist in real world
 Combination of a real scene and a
virtual scene that augments the
scene with additional
information
HISTORY
The augmented reality (AR) was achieved in 1968 by Ivan Sutherland, a Harvard
professor and computer scientist, created the first head mounted display .During
the year of 1970s and 1980s mobile devices like Sony Walkman (1979), digital
watches were invented .The term 1990s the actually augment reality was achieved
from caudell and mizell, at that time augmented reality came into essential
perpetuity “span” Since then, AR’s growth and progress have been remarkable.
How does it work?
Using a mobile application, a mobile phone's camera
identifies and interprets a marker.
 The software analyses the marker and creates a
virtual image overlay on the mobile phone's screen,
tied to the position of the camera.
This means the app works with the camera to
interpret the angles and distance the mobile phone is
away from the marker.
Types of Augmented Reality :
 Marker based AR
This type of reality is also known as Image Recognition. A
camera and a visual marker such as a QR code or a 2D code is used.
 Marker less AR
This type of reality is also known as Location-based reality or GPS.
Data which is provided is based on our location
 Projection Based AR
As the name suggests, artificial light is projected onto realworld
objects . This allows for human interaction by sensing the touch of that
projected light.
 Superimposition Based AR
In this type of reality, the original view of an object is either partially
or fully replaced with a newly augmented view of that same object
Types of Augmented Reality :

• Cell phones
• Projectors (more Ubiquitous Computing)
 Head Mounted Displays:
• Video see-through
• Optical see-through
Augmented Reality vs. Virtual Reality
Augmented Reality
System augments the real world scene
User maintains a sense of presence in real world
Needs a mechanism to combine virtual and real worlds
Hard to register real and virtual
Virtual Reality
Totally immersive environment
Senses are under control of system
Need a mechanism to feed virtual world to user
Hard to make VR world interesting
Applications:
Main classes of applications:
 Medical
 Manufacturing and repair
 Annotation and visualization
 Robot path planning
 Entertainment
 Military aircraft
 Education
Advantages of AR
 AR can be used to increase the knowledge bars of people.
 AR can help people share experiences over long distances
 A life-like experience can be established by AR games
 Games that provide an even more "real" experience
 Things come to life on people's mobile
 Form of escapism
Disadvantages of AR
 Spam and Security
 Social and Real-Time vs. Solitary and Cached
 Using AR can be inappropriate in social situations.
 Openness: Other people can develop their own layers of content to
display
CONCLUSION
 Augmented reality is another step further into the digital age as
we will soon see our environments change dynamically either
through a Smartphone, glasses, car windshields and even
windows in the near future to display enhanced content and
media right in front of us.
 This has amazing applications that can very well allow us to live
our lives more productively, more safely, and more informatively. It
can be said that AR has a very bright and promising future
