  • 3. Beliefs   •  It  must  change   •  I  can  change  it   •  I  must  change  it     Tolera'ng  the  problem  is  not  in  the  DNA  of  a   great  leader

  • 5. 1  -­‐  Embrace   •  Tough  4mes  breed  great  leaders     •  Get  a  chance  to  re-­‐write  the  playbook   –  Make  it  be@er   •  Only  dead  fish  swim  with  the  current   –  Diamonds  are  made  under  incredible  pressure     –  Great  ideas  come  from  tough  4mes     •  Do  more  with  less    
  • 6. 2  -­‐  Think   •  Tough  4mes  can  engage  your  fight  or  flight   response   –  Reac4on  is  rarely  the  best  response   •  Determine  the  problem,  not  the  symptom   –  Confront  reality  –  analy4cs  where  possible     •  Effec4ve  thinking  –  Think  Time   –  Remove  yourself  from  any  distrac4on   –  30  minutes  –  the  third  third    
  • 7. 3  -­‐  Engage   •  Present  the  problem  to  your  team  –  be  transparent   –  Get  agreement  that  it’s  a  real  problem   –  Get  agreement  that  it  needs  to  be  solved  (intolerable)   –  Don’t  panic     •  Encourage  ideas  –  as  a  ques4on  to  solve   –  –  –  –  Solve  the  problem   Capitalise  from  the  problem   There  are  no  bad  ideas  here   Encourage  people  to  challenge  the  status  quo   •  Resist  the  urge  to  slash  and  burn   •  Engage  the  resistors     –  Learn  from  them  –  become  your  biggest  advocates    
  • 8. 4  -­‐  Act   •  Be  BOLD,  be  decisive     •  Build  the  machine   –  Short-­‐term  and  long-­‐term   –  You  don’t  have  to  do  it  alone,  but  is  has  to  be  done   •  The  leader  takes  ownership  of  this   –  Build  monitoring  and  success  measures     •  Review  and  adjust   •  Focus  for  a  business   –  Enhance  service   –  Reduce  costs   –  Increase  revenue  (marke4ng  and  sales  investment)
