What is hybrid teaching?
Hybrid education refers to a synchronous teaching situation in which
a part of the group is present and a part of it is online.
The learning experience should be as good to both groups.
- All present
- Teacher present, students online
- Teacher present, students present+online
- Teacher online, students present+online
- Teacher online, students present
- All remotely

Apps for activating learning
• Teams/Zoom
• Word clouds
• Bingo for directing attention
• Whiteboards and mind maps
• Shared notes
• Polls and quizzes
• Content creation in small groups
– Microsoft 365
– Adobe Creative Cloud Express
– Moodle & H5P
Remembering new things
is not like a bank.
It is more like a workshop.
You need tools to learn,
to remember and to work
online with others.

Use apps on the previous slide
• You can also use apps that you don't sign in to or provide information to.
• You can also use apps that you sign in and share your own materials.
– Do not log in to outside services with the university's credentials.
– Observe the Terms of Use – and their changes!
– You cannot decide to log in or disclose information on behalf of others.
• If you use the apps in such a way that personal data is stored in the service
(e.g. list of names, emails, login), check where the data and servers of the
service are located. If they are located outside the EU, you need to ask
students/colleagues for permission to use the service - and offer an
alternative.
Word clouds
Question that you can answer shortly and several times:
• What apps do you use for learning?
• What do you know about…?
• What are the symptoms of…?
• What factors affect to..?
Two easy apps, no need to sign in:
• AnswerGarden, when the group creates
a common word cloud.
• WordArt, when everyone creates their own word
cloud and defines the form, colors, font…

Flinga sessions and activities
Finnish application for activating, participating and collaborating with others.
• Campus license: edu.flinga.fi (TUNI-sign in).
• Language selection from the bottom of the page (Finnish/English)
Activities: step-by-step pedagogical guides
The idea is to talk in small
groups and answer questions.
You can also use these as
individual tasks.
All activities use Flinga
whiteboard.
• During activity only you will
be able to see the results.
• When you finish the activity
also students can see the
results.
• Change the session rules and
settings if you want your
students to continue working
at the whiteboard.
Flinga Discover - Sovella!
“This activity relies on small groups working on trying to discover solutions to
teacher-defined learning problems. With this the teacher can push students
to collaboratively apply what they have learned, and maybe learn some more.”
• Suggestion: At the end of the activity you or students can group the
answers or mark them correct or non-correct.
Flinga Explore - Innovoi!
“Flinga Explore is a learning activity in which small groups explore solutions to
teacher-defined open-ended problems. This provides the teacher a way to
easily engage students in collaborative and innovative problem solving based
on open-ended problems that have no correct answers.”
• Use in syncronous teaching. Small groups will answer one question at a
time. Teacher desides when he/she will open the next question.
Flinga Reflect – Aktivoi!
“Flinga Reflect is an efficient tool for enhancing evaluation and feedback
situations. It fosters the feedback process by focusing the evaluation on the
most crucial aspects of the process currently under evaluation and motivates
the participants to reflect their thoughts either individually or in small groups.”
• Students can decide when they are ready for the next question.
• Students can also answer as individuals (before webinar). Discussion,
grouping ideas, analyzing or further work can be done together or in small
groups.
Flinga Explore - Innovoi!
Discussion on student activation
1. Introduce yourselves &
What's a good way to start to teaching session?
2. What good methods or apps do you know for group activation?
Polls & quizzes
Amount of students when using a free version of the app.
Polls, exercises, exams, feedback, activation:
• Microsoft Forms
• Blooket: multi-choice quizzes with 11 game methods (60)
• Quizlet: learning vocabulary and terms, combining image and text, and
Quizlet live for small groups (live 40).
• Kahoot: multiple choice (10)
• X-break (slide set available in workshop’s Padlet)
Add slides to quizzes:
• Quizizz: Five question types plus
the ability to add slides (100)
• Nearpod (40)
• Mentimeter (2000+)
Blooket: engaging multiple choice quiz
• At the classroom or at home at your own pace.
• Several game modes determine what else happens in the game than
answering multiple choice questions.
• Students need knowledge, strategy, speed and/or good luck to success.
• You can easily create quizzes, use
public quizizz or import them
from Quizlet.
• The free version is for 60 participants.
Co-operative e-learning

Learning research strongly supports the
vision of the effectiveness of co-operative
learning compared to studying alone.
What is typical for successful groups?
• They discussed both the contents
and the group's work.
• They spent time planning and
organizing their work.
• The interaction was also aimed at easing
tension and expressing togetherness.

  • 20. Use apps on the previous slide • You can also use apps that you don't sign in to or provide information to. • You can also use apps that you sign in and share your own materials. – Do not log in to outside services with the university's credentials. – Observe the Terms of Use – and their changes! – You cannot decide to log in or disclose information on behalf of others. • If you use the apps in such a way that personal data is stored in the service (e.g. list of names, emails, login), check where the data and servers of the service are located. If they are located outside the EU, you need to ask students/colleagues for permission to use the service - and offer an alternative.
  • 21. Word clouds Question that you can answer shortly and several times: • What apps do you use for learning? • What do you know about…? • What are the symptoms of…? • What factors affect to..? Two easy apps, no need to sign in: • AnswerGarden, when the group creates a common word cloud. • WordArt, when everyone creates their own word cloud and defines the form, colors, font… NEW: Add Forms to your Teams meetings!
  • 22.
  • 23. wordart.com IMPORT = copy-paste text of add a web page ADD = individual words Create/ Update
  • 25. Flinga sessions and activities Finnish application for activating, participating and collaborating with others. • Campus license: edu.flinga.fi (TUNI-sign in). • Language selection from the bottom of the page (Finnish/English)
  • 26. Activities: step-by-step pedagogical guides The idea is to talk in small groups and answer questions. You can also use these as individual tasks. All activities use Flinga whiteboard. • During activity only you will be able to see the results. • When you finish the activity also students can see the results. • Change the session rules and settings if you want your students to continue working at the whiteboard.
  • 27. Flinga Discover - Sovella! “This activity relies on small groups working on trying to discover solutions to teacher-defined learning problems. With this the teacher can push students to collaboratively apply what they have learned, and maybe learn some more.” • Suggestion: At the end of the activity you or students can group the answers or mark them correct or non-correct.
  • 28. Flinga Explore - Innovoi! “Flinga Explore is a learning activity in which small groups explore solutions to teacher-defined open-ended problems. This provides the teacher a way to easily engage students in collaborative and innovative problem solving based on open-ended problems that have no correct answers.” • Use in syncronous teaching. Small groups will answer one question at a time. Teacher desides when he/she will open the next question.
  • 29. Flinga Reflect – Aktivoi! “Flinga Reflect is an efficient tool for enhancing evaluation and feedback situations. It fosters the feedback process by focusing the evaluation on the most crucial aspects of the process currently under evaluation and motivates the participants to reflect their thoughts either individually or in small groups.” • Students can decide when they are ready for the next question. • Students can also answer as individuals (before webinar). Discussion, grouping ideas, analyzing or further work can be done together or in small groups.
  • 30. Flinga Explore - Innovoi! Discussion on student activation 1. Introduce yourselves & What's a good way to start to teaching session? 2. What good methods or apps do you know for group activation?
  • 31. Polls & quizzes Amount of students when using a free version of the app. Polls, exercises, exams, feedback, activation: • Microsoft Forms • Blooket: multi-choice quizzes with 11 game methods (60) • Quizlet: learning vocabulary and terms, combining image and text, and Quizlet live for small groups (live 40). • Kahoot: multiple choice (10) • X-break (slide set available in workshop’s Padlet) Add slides to quizzes: • Quizizz: Five question types plus the ability to add slides (100) • Nearpod (40) • Mentimeter (2000+)
  • 32. Blooket: engaging multiple choice quiz • At the classroom or at home at your own pace. • Several game modes determine what else happens in the game than answering multiple choice questions. • Students need knowledge, strategy, speed and/or good luck to success. • You can easily create quizzes, use public quizizz or import them from Quizlet. • The free version is for 60 participants. • www.blooket.com
  • 33. Co-operative e-learning Essi Vuopala’s dissertation: lehti.yliopistopedagogiikka.fi/2014/05/12/onnistuneen-yhteisollisen-verkko- oppimisen-edellytykset-nakokulmina-yliopisto-opiskelijoiden-kokemukset-ja-verkkovuorovaikutus (CC BY) Learning research strongly supports the vision of the effectiveness of co-operative learning compared to studying alone. What is typical for successful groups? • They discussed both the contents and the group's work. • They spent time planning and organizing their work. • The interaction was also aimed at easing tension and expressing togetherness.
