What is EMV? 20 • EMV is a payment method that combines a plastic card with an integrated microprocessor chip. • The name “EMV” stands for EuroPay® MasterCard® Visa® • An EMV card uses a small embedded chip to hold the account number and other sensitive data historically held on the magnetic stripe itself. • 70% of cards expected to have chip by end of 2015

EMV Liability Shift – October 2015 What does “liability shift” mean? • Contrary to popular belief, a merchant does NOT need to shift by October 1st, 2015. • The liability shift moves the responsibility of fraudulent transactions from the merchant to the card issuers when accepting chip cards on a chip-enabled device. • To qualify for the liability shift, a merchant must process 95% of its total card-present transactions through a certified EMV device. 21
