MEDIA BIAS AND THE UPCOMING 2016 ELECTION

  1. 1. MUCH OF OUR MEDIA TODAY IS FAILING THE AMERICAN PUBLIC
  2. 2. TOPICS Sec #1 - INTRO & OVERVIEW Sec #2 - SOME BACKGROUND DISCUSSION Sec #3 - A FEW CONCLUDING THOUGHTS Sec #4 - PROPOSED SOLUTIONS
  3. 3. Media Bias in America has grown to intolerable levels. Strategically, the media have so aligned against Conservatism, that a fair public hearing of the contrasting views for America does not reach much of the current electorate. Such a Progressive tilt to the media gained ascendency in the 60’s and 70’s. Yet the powers that be, seem unable to accept the plainly-stated principle that America is governed for the People . . by the People. But how can such a principle be implemented if the People are kept in a state of ignorance of the facts? Thus, to help move the government into effective policies supported by the majority of Citizens, the Citizens themselves must have access to both the Left and Right views of all governmental issues, including lawmaking and law enforcement. Moreover, the Citizens’ Rights depend on a balance of Federal powers so that skewed mindsets which believe that a few Elitists can best set the direction of the Nation, cannot derail America's legacy of Rights and Opportunities for all. This must be done by providing for significantly more adherence to our Constitutional provisions. In a general sense, a one-sided, politically biased Media is one of America’s greatest enemies. We should remember the cunning of Karl Marx, who advocated: “First, Conquer the Organs of Propaganda.” Unfortunately, that advice has been accepted (knowingly or unknowingly) by those with limited understanding of our Constitution OR those who have less than principled objectives in mind for our Nation. This article explores the Media Bias issue a bit and concludes with a proposal to help straighten out the situation, yet retain intact the Freedom of Speech, as a critically important ingredient of the Founders’ legacy. 5. 5. Per ref A. a mere 7 percent of journalists identify as Republicans, and when they do give money to political campaigns they usually donate to Democrats, lending evidence to Republican presidential candidates’ claims that they are often facing a hostile audience when they deal with the press. As Republican candidates prepare for the critical November 2016 National elections, the question of whether the Media are serving the interests of the full American Citizenry - - or whether our governance has become a manipulator of the People for more self-seeking interests. SECTION #2 - SOME BACKGROUND DISCUSSION Moreover, self-proclaimed Democratic journalists outnumber Republicans by 4-to-1, according to research by Lars Willnat and David Weaver, professors of journalism at Indiana University. They found 28 percent of journalists call themselves Democrats, while just 7 percent call themselves Republicans — though both numbers are down from the 1970s. Those identifying as independents have grown. Among Washington correspondents, the ones who dominate national political coverage, it’s even more skewed, said Tim Groseclose, author of “Left Turn: How Liberal Media Bias Distorts the American Mind.” More than 90 percent of Wash. D.C. journalists vote Democratic, with an even higher number giving to Democrats or Liberal-leaning political action committees, the author said. "The opinion of ten thousand men is of no value if none of them know anything about the subject.” … Marcus Aurelius
  6. 6. As one example of the kind of media distortion that Americans live with on a day-by-day basis, one need look no further than the Feb. 20, 2016 Presidential primary election reports regarding the Dems primary in Nevada and, later, the GOP Primary in S. Carolina. As the chart at the right exemplifies, a typical news article used such a chart to acclaim Hillary Clinton's "impressive" 52% vs Bernie Sanders 47% final vote tabulation. Of course, many of the Progressive journalists and Party establishment, believe Hillary will be the best ultimate contender in the final election against the GOP. But the fact that the Nevada Caucus turnout was quite a small percentage of the overall votes that will be cast in the ultimate election, was only occasionally mentioned. The next few charts will focus on why extrapolating a final outcome from such a small voter base is quite a stretch! SECTION #2 - SOME BACKGROUND DISCUSSION - - ONE EXAMPLE
  7. 7. This chart summarizes in plain numbers what the National goals are for both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton to win their Party's nomination for the U.S. Presidency in November of 2016. In each case the number needed is at least 1 vote higher than 50% of the National delegate count for each Party. It should be noticed that the democratic primary process uses about double the number of delegates than the GOP. So it is important to note here that Donald Trump not only has already won more votes than Hillary, but also needs only about half the number that Hillary must win. So Hillary's 51 vote tally Donald's 67 tally is actually an even smaller entity than just a ratio to Donald's; i.e. 51/67; it is rather 51/67 x 1237/2382. To spare the reader the math effort, please see the next chart. SECTION #2 - SOME BACKGROUND DISCUSSION - - ONE EXAMPLE
  8. 8. In the chart at right, the appropriate ratios are formed to account for the differing total National delegate structure between Hillary C. and Donald T. It is noted that Hillary has made less than half the progress that Donald has made (2.1% vs 5.4%). Moreover, for both candidates, the numbers show that the election contest, in numerical terms has barely started. But the Leftist Media have no qualms about ignoring subtleties, when the political objective (to elect Hillary) is to be supported. Now, America has thoughtful Constitutional strictures regarding preservation of the Citizen's' Rights to Free Speech. But isn't something amiss, when a Citizenry that also has the Right (and Duty) to oversee our governance structure, can be mis-led by the very public Media organizations that provide Citizens the critical knowledge to do their duty effectively? In my view: Yes! Something is clearly amiss! How can a "news paper" be a spreader of news, when instead it is a spreader of one-sided selective facts and opinion? Perhaps if such biased media were required to change their name from "News" to "Non-News" , unless they observed certain steps to avoid bias, then Citizens could better rely on what they read and see, depending on their interest area. For myself, I'd likely bypass the 6:00pm "Non-News" report in favor of a more factual 6:00pm "News" report. And our Nation would be the better for a more knowledgeable, responsible Citizenry. SECTION #2 - SOME BACKGROUND DISCUSSION - - ONE EXAMPLE
  9. 9. So, does the fact that Citizens are not being well served by distorted information - - which: (i) makes oversight of government effectivess difficult, and (ii) incites significant divisiveness across American society - - make you uncomfortable? Well a recent poll (ref B) includes results of the type shown in the adjacent and following charts. In the adjacent chart, several Citizen groupings are asked about the future our children will inherit. In this wording, the orange and grey results do not bode well for our Nation. Shouldn't Citizens be demanding change from our Elected Leaders? Doesn't the variation of thought by the different groupings show that biased public information is leading to undesirable divisiveness? SECTION #3 - A FEW CONCLUDING THOUGHTS
  10. 10. Again, from the recent ref B poll, some further results add to the current discussion. In this question, the several Citizen groupings are asked about the stability of the long cherished "AMERICAN DREAM". In the wording of this chart, the yellow and orange results do not bode well for those who admire and revere the "DREAM". Shouldn't Citizens be demanding change from our Elected Leaders? Doesn't the variation of thought by the different groupings show that (i) significant matters are adrift in America, and (ii) biased public information leads to undesirable divisiveness? SECTION #3 - A FEW CONCLUDING THOUGHTS
  11. 11. SUMMARIZING THE PROBLEM AT HAND: • Availability to Citizens of robust, factual and objective information is a necessary ingredient to the recipe for Citizens maintaining control of our Governance, exerting the Citizens' authority into the American Ship of State, and preserving our Constitutionality and Rule of Law. THE PROPOSED SOLUTION: • All public and governmental Media information reports must be designated and carry a prominent label as to whether it is either "NEWS" or "NON-NEWS", at the option of the news purveyor. • If the report is to be labeled "NEWS", then 40% of every public news release, must contain 2 approximately equal segments, relating to the planned purveyor release, with comments prepared by the Office of the current Speaker of the House and the House Minority Leader, to assure that both of the 2 major political Parties views on the matter at hand are available to every Citizen. • If the report is to be labeled "NON-NEWS", then there shall be no further bias/objectivity requirements upon it, beyond those required under the Freedom of Speech provisions of the American Constitution. 13. 13. THE END ACTUALLY, IT’S NOT THE END - - YOUR VOICE IS IMPORTANT TO OUR NATION. CITIZEN INTEREST, DIALOG AND DATA ARE CRITICAL TO GOOD CIVIC OUTCOMES. AND THAT INCLUDES OUTCOMES WHICH SIMPLY ASSURE PROPER CONDITIONS FOR THE FREE MARKET TO WORK. FELLOW CITIZENS, WE MUST CORRECT THE CURRENT DEFICIENCY IN OBJECTIVITY IN MUCH OF OUR NEWS MEDIA. AMERICA'S FUTURE DEPENDS ON IT.
