  1. 1. The YLD Year in Review Steven P. Gould 2016 Chair January 19, 2017
  2. 2. Who We Are • VBA members who are either: • Under the age of 37 or • Licensed to practice for under three years • Focused on service to the bar and service to the public
  3. 3. Our Areas of Focus for 2016 • Programmatic review • What are we doing, are we doing these things well, and should we continue doing them? • Structural review • How do we best support our efforts that will continue following the conclusion of the programmatic review?
  4. 4. Programmatic Review • Began 2016 with 50+ projects • Led by Jeremy Williams with assistance from past chair Elaina Blanks-Green • Utilized questionnaire to gauge: • Purpose of each project and level of activity for that project • If active, how so? If not, why not? • Plans for future project activity • Three ultimate recommendations: Keep, Tweak, or Drop
  5. 5. Programmatic Review - Results • Kept 7 projects as-is • Tweaked 7 projects • Dropped 9 projects • Additional recommendations: • Consolidated 17 regional projects into 5 statewide projects (with regional leads) • Converted three projects into liaison positions (e.g., Lawyers Helping Lawyers representative)
  6. 6. Structural Review • What structure makes the most sense for a refocused YLD? • Led by Andrew Stockment and recent YLD alum Chris Gill • Primary goals included building depth, ensuring uniformity across projects, and promoting continuity
  7. 7. Structural Review - Results • Changes to names of our Executive Committee and Executive Council • Executive Committee  Executive Board • Executive Council  Leadership Council • Defined terms for members of Executive Board • Uniform leadership structure for each project • Chair and Chair-Elect, also with defined terms • Rosters of members involved in each project
  8. 8. Structural Review - Results • Large and small project models • Addition of reps to substantive law sections, LPMD to Leadership Council • Specific process created for bringing new projects online • Renaming our Spring and Fall Meetings • And communicating that they are open to all of our members
  9. 9. Spring Meeting – The Tides Inn
  10. 10. Fall Meeting Reimagined • First meeting following adoption of recommendations from programmatic and structural reviews • Designed to allow members to limit costs by making a day trip to Charlottesville • Focus on increasing the value proposition for employers
  11. 11. Fall Meeting Reimagined • Full day of programming, beginning at 9 a.m. • Three hours of CLE programming, including 1.5 hours of ethics, weeks before the Oct. 31 deadline • Nationally known keynote speaker, Slate’s Dahlia Lithwick • Panel discussion of four lawyer-legislators to conclude the afternoon
  12. 12. Fall Meeting Reimagined • For the first time, charged a modest registration fee for a YLD meeting • $50/member for 3 CLE hours plus food (light breakfast, lunch, and dinner) • $100/non-members, but fee waived if you joined the VBA for 2017 • The result: our best turnout in years!
