LANGUAGE EDUCATION.
1Fitri, Azmi, Saherawati, Fachrurrozi, Dilaratni, Putri, Abdurrahim2
Introduction
Speaking is considered the most difficult language skill among EFL learners. This article
discusses the problems which EFL learners encounter when speaking English.
Discussion
Munjayanah (2004, cited in Arrifansyah, 2013) mentions four difficulties in speaking
English, namely: inhibition, nothing to say, low or uneven participation, mother tongue use.
Paakki (2013) conducted a comparative study on Finnish and Japanese adult learners of
English. This study revealed that “Both Finns and Japanese saw speaking English as difficult.
The reason of this is due to their previous education which focused too much on grammar
and theory. Another problem experienced by the participants of this study is accent.
Paakki’study also revealed that “The Japanese had considerable difficulty with listening
comprehension, which also affected speech”.
Conclusion
'In this article, two studies about EFL learners’ difficulty in speaking have been discussed.
A study by Munjayanah revealed four problems while Paakki’s study disclosed three issues.
