Abstract : Reality(Orange) - Marcel Moonen (Pt. 2)

  1. 1. Abstract : Reality(Orange) Marcel Moonen (2016) www.marcelmoonen.com
  2. 2. I like series. It is a way of experimentation {system 2: mutation} to understand the process at play. A serie shouldn’t be too long, else it becomes a vicious circle, a loop. Twin Peaks season 1, a good example of a serie, 8 chapter {system 1: mutation of characters}. It was a pity that season 2 had so many more episodes {system 1: pyramid}. Luckily the main clue was somewhere before the end of the second season {system 3: prisma}. Or the album Thriller (Michael Jackson), 9 tracks. A series of singular bodies that spoke for themselves, once assembled, making up a full performance, a story lasting 42 min. I heard about the serie: Orange is the new black, already 67 episodes…, let’s skip that. Chapter two: Abstract : Reality (Orange) With examples I explain the working of the 3 proposed systems {pyramid, mutation, prisma} to analyse creative processes in the arts (cinema, visual, music, literature, philosophy and poetry).
  3. 3. Reason 1: {pyramid} The use of small drops of orange on an overall dark pallet creates a pleasant picture. Reason 2: {mutation} oranges stand for the color of fall, or the Fall, which represents a time of death in film and literature. Reason 3: {prisma} Francis Ford Coppola about the use of oranges: It began as an accident, but became a motiv throughout the movies. Still from the Godfather(Coppola - Oranges
  4. 4. Stills from the Godfather - Serie of oranges
  5. 5. Cézanne – Still life with apples (1890) For example, people think that Cézanne’s subject was the apples {pyramid, definition apple=apple}. Well it’s possible to argue that that’s what it was, and for a long time I was very antagonistic to these apples, they were like superapples, they were like cannonballs. {mutation, metaphor apple=cannonball} - Interview with Barnett Newman just before his death in 1970
  6. 6. B. Newman - Onement, (1948) I did not decide, either in (19)48,47,46,…Im going to paint stripes. I did not take any arbitirary decision …I suppose I thought of them as streaks of light. When I painted this painting which I called Onement, I stayed with that painting for 8, 9 months. Wondering, what have I done?{prisma, the unconsious act} -Interview with Barnett Newman just before his death in 1970
  7. 7. "For a moment she rediscovered the purpose of her life. She was here on earth to grasp the meaning of its wild enchantment and to call each thing by its right name." - Boris Pasternak A process in which an unconsious act leads to a pleasurable outcome, that later is analysed and called. An experimental start of a series, which becomes the body of a performance {prisma} B. Newman – Serie of Stripes (general definition) : Zips (personal metaphor)
  8. 8. Richie Hawtin – Minus Orange (1999)Yello – Oh Yeah (1985) steady-j March 10, 2006 edited over 10 years ago referencing Minus Orange, 12", Blu, ORANGE A driving slice of funky techno, ultimately derived from Yello's classic "Oh Yeah". Some of the versions have a vocal sample from that track, a repeated "Oowh" that drives the track on, while others strip the mix right down to beats, stabs and effects in different combinations. Clever and energetic. Richie used it to great effect on his own "Decks EFX and 909" mix CD. {An experimental start of singular bodies, forming a performance}. The alternate release "Minus Yellow“{mutation} is closer to the Yello original, retaining four notes of the bassline instead of just two, but is also handy to augment this one in the mix, containing several loops in addition to the main track.
  9. 9. Decks, EFX & 909 ... Hawtin displays not only his talents as a mixer but also as a producer, using turntables, {an effects processor, and a Roland pedal, plus a TR-909} drum machine for added beats... An extension of his live sets (though not entirely recorded live), the album employs a degree of improvisation rarely heard on mix albums. The beats are clipped and precise, rarely deviating from a 120 BPM pace. Though fans might resent the fact that it wasn't recorded live, Decks, EFX & 909 simply couldn't have been done well in a live setting - at times, Hawtin has four records spinning at once, and the layers of sound he adds to the show make this album a highly effective techno statement. Review Decks, EFX & 909 (Richie Hawtin) -http://www.allmusic.com/album/decks-efx-909-mw0000671214 {Decomposing the structure of a memorical pyramid (Yello – Oh Yeah (1985)), analysing its structure by newly arranging and re-assembling. 11. 11. “The perception of other people and the intersubjective world is problematic only for adults{pyramid}. The child lives in a world which he unhesitatingly believes accessible to all around him{mutation}. He has no aware of himself or of others as private subjectives, nor does he suspect that all of us, himself included, are limited to one certain point of view of the world. That is why he subjects neither his thoughts, in which he believes as they present themselves, to any sort of criticism. He has no knowledge of points of view. For him men are empty heads turned towards one single, self-evident world where everything takes place, even dreams, which are, he thinks, in his room, and even thinking, since it is not distinct from words.” - Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Phenomenology of Perception ,1945
