Permissioned Blockchains in Action

Published on

Permissioned Blockchains in Action is a tool-agnostic guide to creating innovative applications using blockchain technology. Expert authors Mansoor Ahmed-Rengers and Marta Piekarska-Geater share the insight they’ve gained deploying blockchain systems to production, including essential considerations for software maintenance and the unique security challenges of distributed apps. You’ll go from the why, to the what, to the how of permissioned blockchains, putting theory into practice to implement a simple calculator, a betting game with complete UI, and finally create your capstone project: a centrally banked digital currency. Complex theory and principles are illustrated throughout with byte-sized coding exercises and use cases inspired by the authors’ work in the field. By the time you’re done reading, you’ll be ready to take the plunge into modelling real-world relations as blockchain applications.

  2. 2. Trust in key institutions and governments has been steadily declining over the past two decades. Economic crises, fake news and global pandemics bring a need for transparency, security and provability of information. Business today is no longer based on personal interactions. We are being asked to put faith in email addresses and phone calls. In a globally-connected world, business records need to be immutable, auditable, thus trusted. Permissioned Blockchains aka Distributed Ledger Technology brings with it the promise of changing the way we interact, do business and receive information. Everyone in the network is now able to verify claims others are making.
  3. 3. Permissioned Blockchains in Action is filled with insight, tips and tricks for building and deploying permissioned blockchain systems. You’ll learn vital developer skills for securing your blockchains against threats, writing smart contracts on permissioned blockchains, and picking the blockchain stack that’s best for your project.
  4. 4. Permissioned Blockchains in Action is a technology-agnostic guide to creating innovative applications using DLTs. Permissioned Blockchains in Action is not a manual. What you will gain is a true understanding of why we use blockchains and how to choose the right technology for your problem By the time you’re done reading, you’ll be ready to take the plunge into mapping real- world relations to blockchain applications.
  5. 5. What people are saying about the book: Explains blockchain at a level that just about anybody interested in technology could understand. -Ron Lease Great book. The author introduces concepts very gently and gives enough theory. -Zorodzayi Mukuya Describes how permissioned blockchains work, and analyzes some real-world use cases. -Jose San Leandro
  6. 6. About the authors Mansoor Ahmed-Rengers is a security researcher, currently pursuing his PhD on the security of blockchain technologies at the University of Cambridge. He is the author of five blockchain research papers, the inventor of the Robust Round Robin consensus algorithm, and holds two patents on managing blockchain data. Marta Piekarska-Geater serves as the Director of Ecosystem at Hyperledger. After obtaining her PhD in Computer Security and privacy, she has been in the DLT space since 2014. Marta evangelizes DLTs and Open Source at conferences around the world and helps enterprises with applying permissioned Blockchains to their use-cases. Marta is a valued member of several standardization groups and technical committees.
