Getting Ready for Oral Surgery

  1. 1. GETTING READY FOR ORAL SURGERY Mahr Elder
  2. 2. INTRODUCTION  Dr. Mahr Elder practices as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon in Novato, California. The surgeries Dr. Mahr Elder performs at his practice include wisdom teeth extraction, dental implants, and other procedures that require general anesthesia and careful aftercare and recovery. As the date of an oral surgery approaches, a patient may feel nervous about what might happen during the procedure and the period afterwards. The doctor can answer any questions and will typically provide a few key recommendations to make the process go as smoothly as possible. For instance, eat a light dinner the night before and get plenty of rest, but keep in mind that fasting is typically necessary before the surgery. In many cases, patients are told not to have any food or liquids in the six hours prior to the scheduled procedure.
  3. 3. ORAL SURGERY  The doctor might require that you wear short sleeves for intravenous anesthesia as well as follow other guidelines. Upon arriving, alert the staff if you’ve experienced any changes in your overall health, such as a cold or an upset stomach. Keep in mind that you will need to have a person there to transport you home, as you will be groggy and unable to drive, work, or perform other activities as the anesthesia wears off. To make the period after the surgery more comfortable, prepare a place ahead of time where you can sleep, watch television, read, or otherwise rest. Have soft foods on hand according to your doctor’s recommendations and follow all aftercare instructions carefully to help ensure a smooth recovery.
