Widely Important Prayers

  1. 1. Widely Important Prayers Francis MADOJEMU
  2. 2. The 4 Disciplines of Execution
  3. 3. Bioduns Commentary : Mary and Martha Worship and Serve Luke 10:38-42 Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said,
  4. 4. Bioduns Commentary : Mary and Martha Worship and Serve Luke 10:38-42 “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” And Jesus answered and said to her, “ Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
  5. 5. Notice the word. Distracted That's like the whirlwind it's a distraction Remember Hebrews 12:2 let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, Most of us are distracted by serving
  6. 6. We Have Tried to Substitute Serving for Worship Is being a worker more important than fulfilling your life's purpose Until we design a workers training that equips you to succeed in your life's purpose Teaching you speaking skills, writing presentations etc ( we must go back there)
  7. 7. We Have Tried to Substitute Serving for Worship If you are blessed by the church and you succeed in your life's calling and profession would you not give back to the church Our workers training is designed to do this but its not popular Then we get angry or looks down on someone else who is not a worker like Martha is doing here!
  8. 8. Jesus Does The Opposite You are worried about many things are not important You are worried but its not about your widely important goal Mary has chosen the right part and it will not be taken from her but Martha has chosen the wrong part and it will be taken from her!
  9. 9. Same As I Have Something! If you don't cherish your single gift you would lose Many of us served churches for years and overnight were asked or had to leave and all that we worked on was taken away from us Think about it what if we made sitting at the feet of Jesus are widely important goal in church
  10. 10. Bioduns Commentary : Woman with The Alabaster Box Worship and Serve Matthew 26:7-13 a woman came to Him having an alabaster flask of very costly fragrant oil, and she poured it on His head as He sat at the table. But when His disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste? For this fragrant oil might have been sold for much and given to the poor.” But when Jesus was aware of it, He said to them, “ Why do you trouble the woman?
  11. 11. Bioduns Commentary : Woman with The Alabaster Box Worship and Serve Matthew 26:7-13 For she has done a good work for Me. For you have the poor with you always, but Me you do not have always. For in pouring this fragrant oil on My body, she did it for My burial. Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.”
  12. 12. What Gave Them The Insights? Who teaches people to do right to make these kind of decision? Where did their insight come from?
  13. 13. The Best Example 1 Chronicles 12:32 of the sons of Issachar who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do, their chiefs were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their command
  14. 14. What Gave Them The Insights? They understood the times and the seasons If you don't understand the times you don't know what is important not to talk of widely important
  15. 15. What Gave Them The Insights? God is not a respecter of persons if He did it for Mary and the Woman with the alabaster box Notice Jesus Didn't approve of Martha's serving He approved of the woman with the alabaster box worship
  16. 16. Why Isaiah 6:1-3 In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphims:each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.
  17. 17. Why Is This Significant? 2 Wings Covering Face + 2 Wings Covering our Feet speaks of Worship 2 Wings Flying is service We are expected to do more in worship than in service
  18. 18. Why Is This Significant? God regards worship than service because true service should come out of worship Remember worship is not singing slow songs
  19. 19. Worship & Service Matthew 4:8-10 Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “ Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve. ’”
  20. 20. Worship by Rick Warren Depending on your church background, you probably need to expand your understanding of the real meaning of "worship." You may think of church services with singing, praying and listening to a sermon. Or you may think of ceremonies, candles and communion. Worship can include these elements, but worship is far more than these expressions. Worship is a lifestyle.
  21. 21. Worship by Rick Warren Worship is more than music. For many people, worship is just a synonym for music. They say, "At our church we have the worship first, and then the teaching." This is a big misunderstanding. Every part of a church service is an act of worship: praying, Scripture reading, singing, confession, silence, being still, listening to a sermon, taking notes, giving an offering, baptism, communion, signing a commitment card and even greeting other worshipers
  22. 22. Worship by Rick Warren Actually, worship predates music. Adam worshiped in the Garden of Eden, but music isn't mentioned until Genesis 4:21 with the birth of Jubal. If worship were just music, then all who are nonmusical could never worship. Worship is far more than music. Notice Worship can be listening to God its more important than service
  23. 23. Let Us Pray.... We need to have insights like this to live lives pleasing to God We need insights like this for our nations leaders We need insights like this for church leaders We need insights like this for our fathers and mothers We need insights for our Children
  24. 24. Daniel Had Insights on The Pathway Daniel 1:8-9 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. Now God had brought Daniel into the favor and goodwill of the chief of the eunuchs.
  25. 25. Bob Thompson Pastor, Corinth Reformed Church Do you pray most for what’s important? Or for what’s wildly important?
  26. 26. Bob Thompson Pastor, Corinth Reformed Church I am often asked to pray for important requests. People generally only ask me to pray for important needs. If they think they can handle life or prayer on their own, they don’t ask me to get involved or to pray. But if the matter seems important, they want to talk to the pastor. And they want the pastor to pray.
  27. 27. Bob Thompson Pastor, Corinth Reformed Church I am glad to talk about and pray for what matters most to you. With few exceptions, what’s important enough to you to share with me becomes wildly important to me. Why? Because it’s likely to be an opportunity for Christ to transform your life.
  28. 28. Bob Thompson Pastor, Corinth Reformed Church What do you suppose are the important issues people bring most commonly to me? I would identify three areas – health needs (their own or those of a loved one or friend), financial needs (including jobs or the need for money), and relationships (marriage, family, friendship).
  29. 29. Bob Thompson Pastor, Corinth Reformed Church These are areas where people – you, I mean – feel that my help, my counsel, Very rarely does anyone ask me to pray for what Paul apparently considers “wildly important.” and my prayers are needed.
  30. 30. Bob Thompson Pastor, Corinth Reformed Church He prays strategically for those areas which, if they are not in place, render everything else inconsequential. - WIG?
  31. 31. Paul and the Colossians Let’s Review. "Paul is sitting in a Roman jail, probably chained to a Roman guard, while he writes the letter to the If he thought about prayer like most of us, he would ask the Colossians to pray that God would spring him from prison, that he would be able to get some rest on Colossians. those hard floors, that his health would improve and his life would be spared, that his guard would be kind to him"
  32. 32. Paul and the Colossians Let’s Review. Think about what’s going on in Colosse. Paul’s friend and the founder of the church, Epaphras, has reported to Paul that false teachers are threatening the health of the church. They have strange ideas. Paul has been there with other churches and his own relationship to them became strained.
  33. 33. Paul and the Colossians Let’s Review. In addition, we know from other sources that the city’s commerce had declined because a major Roman trade route had been redirected away from the city. If Paul had prayed like we do, he would have prayed for more jobs in the city, for protection from these perceived threats, for a better relationship with him. Those would be important prayers.
  34. 34. Paul and the Colossians Let’s Review. He prays “wildly important prayers” for things that matter most. I wonder what might He doesn’t pray for any of them. happen if we prayed for one another the way Paul prayed for the Colossians. I’m thinking Paul is on to something here.
  35. 35. Bob Thompson Pastor, Corinth Reformed Church Having opened his letter with thanks, he now turns to prayers for these believers about what should be their WIGs. I am reading this for the umpteenth time, and realizing that I really need to reorient how I pray for others and how I ask others to pray for me.
  36. 36. Bob Thompson Pastor, Corinth Reformed Church It’s a little difficult to outline Paul’s prayer or his thought structure. His grammar teacher would probably not approve of this sentence, because in the original language verses 9-14 form one long run-on sentence. But there are some themes that emerge in his prayer.
  37. 37. Colossians 1:9-12 (NKJV) 9 For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;
  38. 38. Colossians 1:9-12 (NKJV) 10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;
  39. 39. Colossians 1:9-12 (NKJV) 11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.
  40. 40. (1)Pray To Think Spiritually Here is how Paul says it in verse 9: “9For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.” In verse 10 he adds a prayer that they would “grow in the knowledge of God.”
  41. 41. Direction To The Will of God (This directs you to the will of God like Mary and the woman with the alabaster box in other words you will know what you need to do or make priority)
  42. 42. Ephesians 5:15-21 (NKJV) Walk in Wisdom 15 See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, 16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,
  43. 43. Ephesians 5:15-21 (NKJV) Walk in Wisdom 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another in the fear of God.
  44. 44. Be Wise! Understanding the will of God makes you wise If you saw a blessing would you know the value, We deal with relative value same as relative values
  45. 45. It's Abrahams Blessing & not Blessings Galatians 3:13-14 (NKJV) Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
  46. 46. It's Abrahams Blessing & not Blessings Genesis 28:1-4 And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan. Arise, go to Padanaram, to the house of Bethuel thy mother's father; and take thee a wife from thence of the daughters of Laban thy mother's brother.
  47. 47. It's Abrahams Blessing & not Blessings Genesis 28:1-4 And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people; And give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham,.
  48. 48. Colossians 1:9-12 (NKJV) 9 For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;
  49. 49. Colossians 1:9-12 (NKJV) 10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;
  50. 50. It's a Continuous Process Be filled or Be Being filled You being filled not God being emptied out Wisdom knowledge and understanding are all connected
  51. 51. Bob Thompson Pastor, Corinth Reformed Church Let me go back to one of those three areas where people often ask me to help or pray – jobs and finances. For a couple of months we have hosted here at Corinth a “Job Seekers” group on Tuesday afternoon. We have probably had between 30 and 35 people participate in that program. I’ve been there about half the time
  52. 52. Bob Thompson Pastor, Corinth Reformed Church What I’ve noticed is that there seem to be two different groups of people who come to a group like Job Seekers. Some folks come to look for a job. That’s important.
  53. 53. Bob Thompson Pastor, Corinth Reformed Church Others come to learn, grow, and even help other members of the group find a job They get involved in something like this so they can become better people, so they can learn new skills, so they can in turn become more employable. That’s wildly important
  54. 54. Bob Thompson Pastor, Corinth Reformed Church The first group wants to come in, tell you what kind of job they’re looking for, hand over a resume, and see if you have any leads. The second group wants help to review the resume and make it better, wants to know if they should learn a new skill in a new field, wants to know how they can grow personally and spiritually during their time of job seeking. They think differently about a job search.
  55. 55. The difference between the rich man and the poor man Look for work It's not one day prayer Paul says Since the day we heard of you Its the word insights in other translations
  56. 56. The difference between the rich man and the poor man Geography objective test and comprehensive tests One test is for speed. Comprehensive tests your understanding
  57. 57. Bob Thompson Pastor, Corinth Reformed Church What if I spent more time in prayer and effort focusing on one or two wildly important goals each week? The same with prayer. We tend to think better circumstances will lead to greater maturity. If I can get the job, keep my health, and get that person to love me, then I can be strong and patient and joyful.
  58. 58. Bob Thompson Pastor, Corinth Reformed Church Paul doesn’t pray that way. He prays for us to think spiritually, overcome courageously, and love consistently – in other words, for knowledge, strength, and joy – so that no matter what comes, we will reflect the character of Jesus Christ. Amen.
  59. 59. Finally One More Pauline Prayer Philippians 1:9-11 And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
  60. 60. The Amplified Captures it! Philippians 1:9-11 And this I pray:that your love may abound yet more and more and extend to its fullest development in knowledge and all keen insight [that your love may display itself in greater depth of acquaintance and more comprehensive discernment],
  61. 61. The Amplified Captures it! Philippians 1:9-11 So that you may surely learn to sense what is vital, and approve and prize what is excellent and of real value [recognizing the highest and the best, and distinguishing the moral differences], and that you may be untainted and pure and unerring and blameless [so that with hearts sincere and certain and unsullied, you may approach] the day of Christ [not stumbling nor causing others to stumble].
  62. 62. The Amplified Captures it! Philippians 1:9-11 May you abound in and be filled with the fruits of righteousness (of right standing with God and right doing) which come through Jesus Christ (the Anointed One), to the honor and praise of God [ that His glory may be both manifested and recognized].

  91. 91. Even Paul in Trouble Used His Heritage Acts 22:22-29 And they listened to him until this word, and then they raised their voices and said, “Away with such a fellow from the earth, for he is not fit to live!” Then, as they cried out and tore off their clothes and threw dust into the air, the commander ordered him to be brought into the barracks, and said that he should be examined under scourging, so that he might know why they shouted so against him.
  92. 92. Even Paul in Trouble Used His Heritage Acts 22:22-29 And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said to the centurion who stood by, “Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and uncondemned?” When the centurion heard that, he went and told the commander, saying, “Take care what you do, for this man is a Roman.” Then the commander came and said to him, “Tell me, are you a Roman?”
  93. 93. Even Paul in Trouble Used His Heritage Acts 22:22-29 He said, “Yes.” The commander answered, “With a large sum I obtained this citizenship.” And Paul said, “But I was born a citizen.” Then immediately those who were about to examine him withdrew from him; and the commander was also afraid after he found out that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.
