2. For my questionnaire I asked a variety of people and
got 21 responses. This included a varied age range not
just from my peers to get effective answers for a wide
target audience which the horror genre conventionally
aims for. To do this I used the website SurveyMonkey
which enabled me to efficiently create my own survey
and allowed me to use a variety of question types –
including a drop list and tick box’s. To add it was easy
to share my survey because of the amount of options.
3. From my questionnaire
the majority were
between the age of 15-
17 this was then
followed by 18-24 year
olds and 45 or older.
Question 1 - What is your age?
4. The results here
were fairly close. It
is conventional of
males to like horror
films more than
females.
Question 2- What is your
gender?
5. The majority picked the sub-
genre I intended to do –
psychological horror. I
believe this is because it is
quite realistic and can happen
to anyone it can also have
other horror elements in it.
Making the audience on edge.
Question 3 - What sub-genre
of horror do you prefer to
watch?
6. Most people I asked responded with
psychological horrors allow plot twists to
be made and so it makes your mind work
constantly through the film.
Two stated it allows combinations of other
sub-genres.
Many also pointed out that this sub-genre
is generally more realistic and can happen
to anyone. One person said they love the
suspense and fear of the unknown which
this sub-genre holds.
Question 4 - Why do you like
this sub-genre?
7. Interestingly, many mentioned jump
scares and old abandoned locations.
This was then followed by the blonde
girl dying first.
The rest were varied, such as;
The killer is pretty much always
invincible.
Creaking doors, never any phone signal
and that the idiot that's about to get
killed never looks behind them.
There has to be a strong protagonist that
we follow through the film.
Villain outsmarting the protagonists.
Where the victim goes through hell, but
some how makes it out and escapes or
kills the one who kept them captive.
Question 5 - What stereotypes
do you like in a horror movie?
8. Over 50%
preferred to see
the villain straight
away and almost
no one didn’t
want the villain to
be seen.
Question 6 - Do you prefer to
see the villain...
9. Most disliked a predictable plot
and cheesy or stupid endings.
A handful hated overused jump
scares.
And one disliked characters that
are not developed and said the
viewer needs to be able to
identify and empathise with the
characters.
Question 7 - What do you
dislike about horror movies?
10. Here is what some of the people I asked said;
Cabin in the woods. Because I like all the monsters and the
stoner guy. You're next. Because of the girl power. Carrie,
because it's cute and she's got power.
28 days later as it focuses on the zombie horror aspect only to
reveal that the real evil is man
psycho this type of horror could actually happen in real life
and does.
Halloween (original one) Still makes me jump in places
despite watching it numerous times.
Fright Night. Roddy Mcdowell is excellent.
Probably the hills have eyes because it's just brutal.
Dawn of the Dead - it has a great story.
My favourite horror film has to be Alien, as there is a great
buildup of suspense and the alien is just something from
nightmares.
Orphan because it's so twisted
Piranha 3D. Great special effects
28 Days Later - brilliant story, no cliche stuff.
Halloween, Scream and a Nightmare on Elm street. In
Halloween Michael Myers is so creepy, it genuinely makes me
scared, and in scream they take parts from all different horror
genres and change the stereotypes of a horror movie making it
less predictable. In a nightmare on elm street, its an
interesting storyline, as the teenagers are forced to confront
their fear of Freddie as they cant stay awake forever.
Question 8 - What is your
favourite horror movie and
why?
11. The majority
wanted to see a
female victim
which follows the
conventions of this
genre.
Question 9 - Which type of
victim do you prefer?
12. The main two things the
people I asked found most
important and effective in
a horror trailer was jump
scares and character
attachment. This was then
followed by background
music, the 4 technical
elements and low key
elements which I myself
believe to be the most
significant.
Question 10 - What
do you think is the
most important
thing for an effective
film trailer of the
horror genre?
