LESSON #1: DESIGN FOR THE FUTURE, NOT FOR TODAY • Innovation requires VISION • The App Store did not exist at the time the iPhone launched (it actually came about a year later) • This was not “playing it safe” • This was about designing for the FUTURE as opposed to TODAY #1 – Do not be stopped by existing infrastructure in education or policy

LESSON #2: START SMALL AND GROW • iPhone originally only available on the AT&T platform for the first five years • Allowed for the platform to be honed and refined before going large scale where variation could kill the vision • Also, provided a joint investment so multiple companies were supporting the vision of success #2 – Target your launch sites

  10. 10. LESSON #3: MARKETING #3 – Build tools to communicate your message. The technology in Jurassic World? Made possible by computer scientists. Computer science would have been a better career path than training raptors… … but I can handle it. I’m from Minnesota.
  11. 11. LESSON #4: TRAILBLAZERS ARE KEY • Early adopters are to be embraced, supported, and celebrated • How many of you know at least ONE amazing teacher? • Treat them well, what you are asking is not easy #4 – This is you. CS Education needs you.
  12. 12. LESSON #5: TEAM EFFORT • The vision had to spread beyond the “company” to include other tech providers • Information, training, communication, needs to be accessible to stakeholders. This includes parents, principals, students, universities, industry, after school entities, museums, etc. #5 – These are your friends. Collaboration is key to Computer Science for all.
  13. 13. LESSON #6: SOCIAL MEDIA BUILDS MOMENTUM • New products are regularly launched using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Snapchat, etc. • #CSforAll – White House Initiative

  15. 15. LESSON #7: BE RELEVANT • What is wrong with this image? • “There’s an App for that.” – Texting, Email, internet, cell phone access, maps, technological connectivity toward global society • College and career ready expectations for all students #7 – Would you do it?
  16. 16. LESSON #8: BE DIFFERENT • The original iPhone introduced new platform, a new interface, a new system • Ask your students – Different is appealing • When you claim similarity, it’s easy to say “We already do that.” #8 – Embrace differences of CS education.
  17. 17. LESSON #9: MULTIPLE ITERATIONS ARE NECESSARY • Just like our lesson plans, we need to constantly revisit the vision to make improvements • CS Education 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 3.0 S…. #9 – Try, try, and try again.

LESSON #10: ACCESS IS KEY • Whether it’s price dropping or cost-effective models, the model will only scale with a vision of access for ALL • This means using free curriculum, finding innovative ways to train teachers, building exposure and experience in K-12, leveraging CTE and STEM TOGETHER #10 - CS ED NEEDS TO BE BUILT ON ACCESS AND EQUITY

How do you get others involved? • Who are your partners? • Where are your launch sites? • Where can you give feedback to inform future iterations? • What are your baseline access and equity metrics, and how do you measure increases?

YES, UTAH CAN BE INNOVATIVE… • We are using these themes to build a #CSforALL initiative as a Code.org partner state. • Nominate a teacher! • K-6 Trainings are free, include GEAR and relicensure points, build into existing elementary programs • Middle School Science cohort includes teachers, district leaders, and representatives from all our informal science education institutions. • High school cohorts held spaces for Youth-In-Custody teachers • Industry certification pathways and partnerships for high schools with Department of Workforce Services • Flyers to parents – “These schools are offering CS, is yours?”
