Eiheiji A temple alive with real Zen monastic practice
Eiheiji is a Zen Buddhist monastery where teachings of Shakamuni Buddha are strictly inherited and it was founded by
Dogen-Zenji in 1244. He devoted himself to training his followers in the perfection of Zen practice in every action of daily
life. Zen has been scrupulously observed and passed down by his successors. Still today at Eiheiji over one hundred monks
devote themselves wholeheartedly to his practice of shikantaza.

“Soto Zen” is one of the denominations of Zen Buddhism established by Dogen-Zenji. One of the most fundamental
teachings is Zazen, the seated meditation (sikantaza)．And he taught that all our daily activities including chanting sutras,
eating, sleeping and cleaning were the another part of practice, just like zazen.

The Hakujukan hotel of Eiheiji Shinzen presents an environment where guests can enjoy pleasant facilities and services like those
of a Japanese inn, while also partake in authentic Buddhist vegetarian cuisine and sitting Zen as a monastery, for a true Zen
experience.
The "Zen Concierges," each trained at the Eiheiji Temple, can provide guests with advice on Zen training at the temple, as well as
experiencing the world of Zen within the Hakujukan hotel.
After experiencing Zen, relax in the open baths. Then, the restaurant awaits with fine Buddhist vegetarian cuisine and delicious
drinks from Echizen in Fukui prefecture (Hokuriku area) .

Eiheiji visitors rules
Eiheiji is the Zen training monastery.
All visitors have to follow rules for protect traditional monastic practice and environment.
1.Please wear neat, modest clothing, suitable for a place of religious practice.
2.Be quiet all times, especially in the zazen, lecture, and ceremony halls.
3.When walking, either indoors or outdoors, always keep to the left.
4.Do not touch the bells, drums, other instruments or altar furnishings.
5.Smoking is prohibited except in areas specifically posted for smoking.
6.Photographing the priests and monks is prohibited.
7.Visitors who are drinking alcohol or who cause a nuisance will not be permitted to enter the temple.
