The Peloponnesian War <ul><li>Background: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Athenians had formed </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>the Delian League. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Spartans formed the </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Peloponnesian League </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>to rival them. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Athenians wanted democracy, </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>while Spartans urged for oligarchy </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>(rule by a few). </li></ul></ul>

The Peloponnesian War <ul><li>Many Greeks resented Athens and joined Sparta </li></ul><ul><li>The war lasted for 27 years </li></ul><ul><li>Sparta won the war because they were located inland and could not be attacked by sea </li></ul><ul><li>Athenians crowded inside the city and plague developed. </li></ul><ul><li>Athens remained a power in Greece but no longer dominated. </li></ul>
