Telefónica leads the European R&D efforts in the field of Smart Cities • • • • Telefónica is the second Telco Operator in R&D effort and the second ICT company by participation in the 7th Framework Programme promoted by the European Commission Telefónica foresaw the huge potential of Smart Cities and embarked in one of its earlier initiatives, Smart Santander project, with the initial focus on populating the city with sensors as a first step towards creating a Smart City The next step was being able to obtain value from the sensors’ data and at this stage, the platform becomes the key element, therefore Telefónica promoted FI-WARE, lead by Telefónica and engaging many stakeholders (as seen last week in FI-WARE event in Santander) And finally, we are working in innovation projects to help democratize the 2 Internet of Things, by expanding to other customer segments, aside from Telefónica I+D
  3. 3. 01. Smart Santander_
  4. 4. Smart Santander project - winner of the Future Internet Award! Smart Santander aims at providing an European test facility for the research and experimentation of architectures, key enabling technologies, services and applications in the context of the Smart City Telefónica I+D 4
  5. 5. Over 20 thousand sensors already deployed Telefónica I+D 5
