  2. 2. Dank  adjective  unpleasantly cool and humid.  The dank, dreary night made the house seem eerie and oppressive.
  3. 3. Lacerate  verb  cut or tear irregularly  The man had several deep lacerations on his face, where he was cut brutally in the knife fight.
  4. 4. Aristocrat  noun  a member of the aristocracy or noble/upper class  The aristocrat was ugly, but well dressed, with a well- tailored suit that fit his thin, wiry frame perfectly.
  5. 5. Feudal  adjective  Adjective form of Feudalism: a system of government in medieval times where knights ruled over serfs.  In Feudal times, the serfs did all the work, while the knights protected them from outside threats.
  6. 6. Debacle  noun  a sudden and violent collapse.  After the debacle with the eggs, I decided to switch permanently to cereal for breakfast.
  7. 7. Imprudent  adjective  not prudent or wise  Fighting at school is imprudent.
  8. 8. Surmount  Verb  deal with successfully; scale to the top of.  The mountain seemed large and difficult, but the rock climber surmounted it with ease.
  9. 9. Grisly  adjective  shockingly repellent; inspiring horror.  A grisly scene met the crime scene investigators. That’s Grizzly Bear to you!
  10. 10. Scruples  noun  motivation deriving logically from ethical or moral principles that govern a person's thoughts and actions  The petty thief showed no scruples as she shot the old man behind the convenience store cash register.
  11. 11. Sallow  adjective  unhealthy looking  The sick, sallow face of the invalid peered out under a baseball cap.
  12. 12. Zealous  adjective  marked by active interest and enthusiasm.  The king’s zealous envy of his neighboring kingdom led to a war between the two territories.
  13. 13. Cower  verb  show submission or fear  The stray cat cowered in the corner in fear.
