Arthur ashe remembered

  1. 1. ARTHUR ASHE REMEMBERED John McPhee
  2. 2. SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT  Subjects and verbs must agree in number, regardless of the order in which the words appear in a sentence. One type of confusing subject is the hard -to-find subject that comes after the verb. A sentence in which the subject comes after the verb is said to be inverted. Subject and verb order is usually inverted in questions.  In the following examples, the subjects and verbs are inverted.  In the motorcade were many cars.  Is Arthur Ashe the U.S. Open champion?  The verb “were” agrees with the subject “cars.” The verb “is” agrees with the subject “Arthur Ashe.”  To check inverted sentences for subject -verb agreement, reword them so that the subject comes at the beginning.  Inverted: There were many pictures in the museum.  Reworded: Many pictures were in the museum.  Note that the words there and here at the beginning of a sentence often signal an inverted sentence. The words there and here never function as subjects of sentences .
  3. 3. PRACTICE  The following sentences are inverted. Write C if the subject verb agreement is correct. Write I if the subject -verb agreement is incorrect. Then, on the line following each sentence, write the correct form of the verb .  1. ______ As they rounded the curve, there were a loud noise.  2. ______ Was Lyndon Johnson the next President?  3. ______ There is several versions of the event.  4. ______ On the wall was many of Georgia O’Keeffe’s paintings.  5. ______ Are they well known in the world ?
