Subjects and verbs must agree in number, regardless of the
order in which the words appear in a sentence. One type of
confusing subject is the hard -to-ﬁnd subject that comes after the
verb. A sentence in which the subject comes after the verb is
said to be inverted. Subject and verb order is usually inverted in
In the following examples, the subjects and verbs are inverted.
In the motorcade were many cars.
Is Arthur Ashe the U.S. Open champion?
The verb “were” agrees with the subject “cars.” The verb “is”
agrees with the subject “Arthur Ashe.”
To check inverted sentences for subject -verb agreement, reword
them so that the subject comes at the beginning.
Inverted: There were many pictures in the museum.
Reworded: Many pictures were in the museum.
Note that the words there and here at the beginning of a
sentence often signal an inverted sentence. The words there and
here never function as subjects of sentences .
