  9. 9. CORE CONCEPTS
  10. 10. MDS MODELS Container that encapsulate entities, hierarchies and collections that define a business entity or area of interest. Models can be versioned.
  11. 11. ENTITIES In their simplest form they are the base container for data. You can think of it as the equivalent of a database table. It contains all of the attributes that define a business entity.
  12. 12. ATTRIBUTES Describe a member of an entity. You can think of them as the equivalent of a table’s column. Can be free from, Domain based or a file.
  13. 13. HIERARCHIES AND COLLECTIONS
  14. 14. HIERARCHIES A hierarchy is a tree structure that represents the relationships between members. You can use them to: - Group similar members for organizational purposes. - Consolidate and summarize members for reporting and analysis. Members have one and only one parent.
  15. 15. DERIVED HIERARCHIES Based on parent-child relationships between two existing entities. Relationships are inferred based on domain-based values.
  16. 16. EXPLICIT HIERARCHIES Contain leaf members from one entity. Consolidated members are created and leaf members are explicitly assigned to the consolidated members.
  17. 17. COLLECTIONS Groups of consolidated members of an explicit hierarchy and leaf members from a single entity.
  18. 18. BUSINESS RULES AND VALIDATIONS
  19. 19. BUSINESS RULES - If / Then statements that check for the existence of a given condition across the attributes of a member. They can initiate actions such as defaulting values, changing values, validations and external workflows. - Business rules are evaluated in an order corresponding to the priority assigned to them.

  23. 23. CONSUMING MASTER DATA
  24. 24. SUBSCRIPTION VIEWS Standard SQL Server views that provide access only to the entity’s attributes in a variety of formats. 25. 25. THE MASTER DATA HUB
  26. 26. MASTER DATA HUB ARCHITECTURE After data is generated in the multiple OLTP applications, the data is extracted with SSIS for cleansing and deduplicated using DQS. It is then loaded into Master Data Services for consolidation and management by the data stewards. Master data can then flow back to the OLTP systems standardizing the definition of business entities across the enterprise.
