Magazine cover conventions

  2. 2. Masthead The position of the masthead is usually in the top-left corner and should be the largest text on the page. The style of the masthead should reflect the audience, for example ‘Little White Lies’ have a graphical style masthead.
  3. 3. Photograph/ image The image on the front cover should always reflect the audience and style of the magazine, the type of shot used if often a mid-shot or extreme close-up and the Mise-en-scene should show connotations of the type of magazine it is.
  4. 4. Typeface There is usually a mixture of fonts used depending on the story, however they are usually kept to a minimum of three different fonts. They vary in size, colour, bold/ italic and capitalised.
  5. 5. Buzz word These entice the audience into the magazine and stories involved. These words usually include ‘free’, ‘exclusive’ and ‘only’.
  6. 6. Banner These are used on the front page of a magazine to give information about the content in the magazine.
  7. 7. Anchorage text This is the text which overlaps the main image to explain what the films storyline is about.
  8. 8. Film magazine company: Empire -Empire is a British magazine that is published by Bauer Consumer Media every month. -Their first issue was publicised in July 1989. -It is specific to film. -The editor is Mark Dinning.

Film magazine company: Sight and Sound -Sight and Sound is also a British film magazine that is published monthly by the British Film Institute. -The first publication was in 1932. -The company was handed to the BFI in 1934. -The current editor is Nick James. -It writes reviews for new film releases each month, including art house films and blockbusters.

Film magazine company: Little White Lies -Little White Lies is a British bi-monthly independent film magazine. -The magazine features writing, illustration and photography which relates to cinema. -Each issue is themed around the film on the front cover. -It is distributed to over five hundred outlets in the UK.
