Why A University Degree No Longer Guarantees A Stable Job <
- June 06, 2020
You don't have to be a genius or a visionary or even a college graduate
to be successful. You just need a framework and a dream _ - Michael

There she was.
Melody had studied hard for the past 4 years and graduated with a first-class degree in Biochemistry.
She had believed that a great course like Biochemistry was immediately going to get her a job once she came out of
school.
But she was in for a surprise of her life.
It's now been 3 years and counting, yet, she has no job.
She had applied to several companies but none of them recruited her.
Without enough money to cater for herself, she was forced to return to her parents’ house and live with them.
Where did it go wrong for Melody?
Your guess is as good as mine.
You are not the only one with a degree any longer
The world has evolved since the industrial revolution where there was an enormous need for human resources.
Those were the days where even before you finished university, companies would line up and compete to get graduates to
work with them.
We are now in the 21st century and the story has completely changed.
Technology and Artificial Intelligence are trying to replace the role of humans in the field of work.

On top of that, companies are no longer chasing after graduates, the reverse is true.
Graduates now have to chase after companies and hope that they land a job with them after school.
Compared to the previous century when few people had college
degrees, everyone is going to school and getting a degree nowadays.
More students are attending universities more than ever in the history of the world.
This means you are no longer the only person to have a degree in that course that you have pursued.
What therefore makes you unique?
What makes you stand out and what will cause your potential employers to identify and give you the opportunity to work
with them?
"Go to school, learn hard, get good grades and you will get a good job" era is gone
In a world where going to school and coming out with good grades, were equated to success, what has happened to this
common adage?
Where has it gone wrong?

Why do we still find people who have Masters and Doctorate degrees still struggling to find even entry job opportunities?
Has this advice the older generation gave us ceased to be true in our lifetime?
Itis high time you woke up to the realization that just having a university degree is no longer enough.
Getting a first-class degree is important but that doesn't guarantee you a job.
There are so many people who didn't get a first-class degree, dropped out of school, and yet still found themselves
successful.
How did that happen?
When people say you should go to school, what at all do they mean?
Is learning hard all about spending hours and hours behind apile of books?
What is the worth of a good grade in real life today?
3. Of the several courses you took in the university, how many of them do you actually use in your real world?
These are tough questions that you have to be honest with yourself and answer.
Although good grades are important, you don't necessarily need them to make it in life.
Is every degree holder successful in life?
Some people pride themselves with the schools they went to, but the
bottom line is that you can even be an alumnus of Harvard and still
become unemployed!
Yes, that is the hard truth.
Your school shapes and gives you great connections in life but it can never guarantee you a stable job or career.
You can get good grades on paper but you must realize that in life, you are not judged by the grades you have, but by your
ability to solve problems in your world.
Are schooling and education really the same thing?
So when people advise the younger generation to go to school what do they really mean?
Can a person go to school and still come out as an uneducated graduate?
| so much believe that is very possible.
A university degree can guarantee the fact that you schooled but it can never guarantee whether you educated yourself or
not.
You can go to school and never know your identity and worth as a human being.
You can go to school and never develop the abilities, skills, and gifting that come naturally to you.
Until you are able to understand the difference between schooling and
education, you might deceive yourself by thinking that when you go to
school, you have educated yourself.
People have come to associate schooling with the formal process of applying to either a university, technical institute, etc.
and going for lectures.
Education on the other hand goes beyond schooling.
The word education comes from the Latin words educere, educatum, educo. They all mean to draw out, nourish, bring up.
Education is based on the premise that you have something great inside that needs to come out.
It seeks to bring out the best in you.
It doesn't guarantee you a job but it makes sure you are prepared to take on life.
It trains you to harness your strengths and find ways to complement your weaknesses.
4. When you are educated, you have a solid self-identity and a framework
that will help you realize all the potential inherent in your life.
So | pose this question to you, are you just schooling or you are educating yourself?
There is a limit to schooling but there is no limit to education.
| find it difficult to understand why people stop learning when they complete school.
For an educated person, learning never stops. You learn till the day you die.
It means constantly educating yourself in every aspect of your life.

Thus, going to school might not really mean you have been trained and prepared for the world of work.
Most graduates come out unprepared for the job market
How many graduates have a framework for the career they want to be in?
At what level in your university education do you actively begin to research the potential companies you might want to
work in?
The job market has become ultra-competitive in the 21st century.
Therefore you would have to prepare for life after school even while you are still a student.
For those who want a job right after school, at what time do you normally get your CVs ready?
Many people do this when they are in their final year and about finishing school.
How often do you research the relevant skills needed in the jobs or companies you want?
What steps have you taken to hone the skills needed for the industry you want to be in?
How many industry seminars do you attend prior to your graduation?
How well do you know the industry and company you want to work in?
These are things your school or degree wouldn't do for you.
Your degree wouldn't teach vou how to network with people. It wouldn't
