3. We Shepherds Sing
THOMAS WEELKES
We shepherds sing, we pipe, we play,
to celebrate this festive day.
Fa la la.
This beautiful morn a child was born.
Oh sing and Rejoice!
We dance with mirth to honor his birth.
Oh sing and rejoice!
Fa la la.
Early English (1598), edited by John B. Haberlen (1981)
Glory toGod (Messiah)
GEO RG E FRIDER IC HANDEL
Glory to God, and peace on earth.
Good will toward men.

Saw You Never in the Twilight
(E I GHT CHOR AL OR ISONS)
HAROLD FRIEDELL
Cecil Frances Alexander
Saw you never in the twilight
when the sun had left the skies,
up in heav’n the clear stars shining
through the gloom, like silver eyes.
So of old the wise men watching,
saw a little stranger star,
and they knew the King was given,
and they followed it from far.
Know ye not that lowly baby
was the bright and morning Star?
He who came to light the Gentiles
and the darkened isles afar.
And we, too, may seek his cradle,
there our hearts’ best treasures bring.
Love and faith and true devotion
for our Savior, God, and King.
In sweet rejoicing
now sing and be glad!
Our hearts’ joy
lies in the manger
and it shines like the sun
in the mother’s lap.
You are the Alpha
and the Omega.

5. Magnificat inG
CHARLES VILLIER S STANFOR D
Claudia Benack, Soprano
My soul doth magnify the Lord and my spirit
hath rejoiced in God my Savior.
For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden.
For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath magnified me and holy is his Name.
And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations.
He hath shewed strength with his arm;
He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat
and hath exalted the humble and meek.
He hath filled the hungry with good things
and the rich he hath sent empty away.
He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant
Israel as he promised to our forefathers,
Abraham and his seed forever.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be.
World without end, Amen.
Mary’s Song, Luke 1:46-55
6. Tomorrow Shall
Be My Dancing Day
ARR. BY DAVID WILLCOCKS
Tomorrow shall be my dancing day;
I would my true love did so chance
To see the legend of my play,
To call my true love to my dance.
Sing, oh! my love, oh! my love, my love, my love,
This have I done for my true love.
Then was I born of a virgin pure;
Of her I took fleshly substance.
Thus was I knit to man’s nature
To call my true love to my dance.
In a manger laid, and wrapped I was
So very poor, this was my chance
Between an ox and a silly poor ass
To call my true love to my dance.
Traditional English Carol
7. The Three Kings
HEALEY WILLAN
“Who knocks tonight so late?”
the weary porter said.
Three kings stood at the gate
each with a crown on head.
The serving man bowed down,
the Inn was full, he knew.
Said he “In all this town
is no fit place for you”.
A light in the manger lit;
there lay the Mother meek.
This place is fit.
Here is the rest we seek.
Come, come. They loosed their latchet strings
so stood they all unshod.
“Come in, come in, ye kings
and kiss the feet of God.”
Laurence Hausman
8. Ut Hoy (Wonder Tidings)
J OHN LA MONTAINE
Claudia Benack, Soprano • Bronwyn Reed Catalano, Soprano
XiuRu Liu, Alto • Kevin Gruden,Tenor • Dimitrie Lazich, Bass
Can I not sing but ‘Hoy’,
When the jolly shepherd made so much joy?
The shepherd upon a hill he sat;
He had on him his tabard and his hat,
His tarbox, his pipe, and his flagat;
His name was callèd Jolly JollyWat,
For he was a good herdés boy.
Ut hoy!
For in his pipe he made so much joy.
The shepherd upon a hill was laid;
His dog to his girdle was taid;
He had not slept but a little braid,
But ‘Gloria in excelsis’ was to him said.
The shepherd said anon right,
I will go see yon marvelous sight,
9. Whereas the angel singeth on hight,
And the star that shineth so bright.
Now must I go where Christ was born.
Farewell, I come again to mourn.
Dog keep well my sheep and corn,
And warn well, warroke when I blow my horn.
Wat to Bethlem come was,
He sweat he had gone faster than a pace,
He found Jesus in a simple place,
Betwixt an ox and an ass.
Jesu, I offer thee my pipe,
My skirt, my tarbox and my scrip.
Home to my fellows will I skip,
And also look unto my sheep.
Now may I well both hope and sing,
For I have been at Christ’s bearing.
Home to my fellows now will I fling,
Christ of Heav’n to his bliss us bring.
Early English Ballad
10. God SoLoved the World
(The Crucifixion)
JOHN STAINER
God so loved the world that he gave
his only begotten Son,
That whosoever believeth in him should not
perish but have everlasting life.
For God sent not his Son into the world
to condemn the world.
God sent not his Son into the world
to condemn the world,
But that the world through
him might be saved.
John 3:16-17

11. The Shepherd’s Story
CLAR ENCE DICKINSON
Kevin Gruden,Tenor • Dimitrie Lazich, Bass • Claudia Benack, Soprano
Nowell! Nowell! Sing we clear!
Holpen are all folks on earth,
Born is God’s son so dear.
To Bethlem did they go, the shepherds three,
To see where it were so or no,
Whether Christ were born or no to set us free.
Masters, in this hall, hear ye news today,
Brought over sea and ever you I pray.
Then to Bethlem town did the shepherds go,
And in a sorry place heard the oxen low.
Therein did they see a sweet and goodly May,
And a fair old man; upon the straw she lay.
And a little child on her arm had she.
“Wot ye who this is?” said the hinds to me.
Ox and ass him know kneeling on their knee.
Wondrous joy had I this little babe to see.
This is Christ the Lord, masters be ye glad!
Christmas is come in, and no folks should be sad.
William Morris
12. On January 19, 20 and 21, 1997, the Chancel Choir recorded 29 compositions
with the intention of producing a double Christmas CD. Using only 16 of those tracks,
a single disc was eventually produced later that year in time for the holidays. Entitled
Angels We Have Heard, it was released under the Pro Organo label. The remaining 13 unused
and previously unreleased tracks from those 1997 recording sessions were recently obtained
from the original engineer, Frederick Hohman. In November, 2016, 11 of those 13
tracks were remastered and comprise the contents of this album, a Christmas
gift to the Shadyside congregation from the Stamy family.
